she's not registered anywhere and the host didn't provide any suggestions for gifts. Also, I asked the host if I could contribute anything to the food and she kept insisting I "just bring myself", but I feel wierd showing up somewhere without a contribution to the food. My friend is Indian -- is there a cultural dimension to this?

What are the customs associated with gift-giving in Brazil or other Latin American cultures? I need to go to a baby shower soon for a couple recently emigrated from Brazil to the US that will be giving birth to their first son. Iâd like to take a great gift.

Brazil is not a latin country or have latin american culture. Brazil have brazilian culture, which is mixed, but very different if compared to mexican, puerto rican, cuban, etc.
Brazilians may be portuguese, italians, germans, russians, polishes, serbians, croatians, romanians, greeks, turkishes, arabs, jewishes, persians, indians, natiuve indians, , japanese, coreans, afro, burt, never, "latinos".
Man, we live in a globalized world. Brazilian have occidental culture and much influence of movies and series from the USA. Then, brazilian people tend to be very close to other persons of West. Almost the same behavior of somebody from Europe or USA, for brazilians from any big city.
Then give a gift that you would to give to a baby from your own country: a bear, duck, or another toy for little children. If you don't like toys, give a box of luxury soaps, or any other product for babies.
