How should I design my gift for my new baby cousin?

We decided we would send my Aunt a cookie basket. I would like it to include "It's a boy!" cookies and police type themes. The little one is named after his father's father who was a policeman who died when my uncle was in his teens. We thought it would be really meaningful to include some sort of police car or shield or something in the basket to represent who he was named after. Should I do mostly baby stuff and maybe a car at the bottom or mostly police stuff with its a boy on it?

I think you should mix n match. I went to Target the other day and they has a rubber ducky dressed in a police uniform.. It was made by the brand munchkin. And there are websites where you can find cut onesies with cute slogans like "chick magnet" on them. Just type in police onesies an you'll probably find one. And police car would be cute. Maybe you could find a basket and spray paint it the same colors as his grandfathers uniform. One of those picture frames that look like an open book buy a baby themed one so you can place a pic of grandpa on one side and baby or daddy on the other! Oh and back to the onesies you can actually get a pic of grandpa make it to one of those iron on patches and iron it on the onesie! Also maybe some things that dad and grandpa did togther when he was alive? togther? Keep the tradition! Good luck and hope this helps!

There are so many cute baby outfits on the clearance racks at Target for under 10 dollars. Also little baby rattles at target are like 6 dollars and super cute. Baby blankets and baby hats are cheap and something that she or he will need!!

What type of gift should I get for my friend who is hosting my baby shower?

Anything crystal is always nice, like a small serving dish,glasses,vase, or candlesticks. But if she's a foodie, maybe something along the lines of a cheese sampler, or nice bottle of wine. If she's a girly girl, maybe a small gift basket from a bath shop with body spray and soaps.
It should reflect the extravagance of the shower. If it's pretty simple with juice and sandwiches or professionally catered and serving alcoholic beverages, you might put a price range $20 to $40 respectively.
I'm not sure about when to present it, but when my best friend had her wedding shower (which was on the extravagant side), she brought her host gift to the shower and gave it to her right away. The host opened it after all the bride to be gifts were opened and documented. The hostess gift was passed around the group just like the other gifts were to be commented and ooh ahhed over.

Depends on who she is and what she likes. I have a hard time guessing what the people who threw mine liked, So I gave each of them a boquet of flowers and a thank you card with certificates for spa services like mani/pedis. You may also try giving them gift cards for resturants, book stores if they are readers or anything else that meets their interest.
My best friend gave her host (4 host for 3 diff showers) silver picture frames with a poem inside along with a card of thanks.

is it distasteful to bring a 9 month old to a funeral?

One of my students died from Cystic Fibrosis and is having a funeral this Saturday- I would like to go, but doubt I could get a sitter- My family never really trained me the whole formal manner thing- (example: at my baby shower I didn't even think to show everyone the gifts). I have been to a lot of funerals, but do not remember if anyone every brought infants or not- especially ones that were not immediate family- any advise would be much appreciated and possibly help me avoid a socially disgraceful situation

I don't know about being distasteful, but you'd be better off trying to get a sitter if you can. It's not that bringing a baby to a funeral is bad, babies cause distractions when they cry and funerals are about focusing on the life of the deceased and their family. If you can't find a sitter, take the baby with you to the visitation before the funeral and express your condolences there, since visitations are less formal than the funeral itself.

Kathy, we did something similar on the arrival of an adopted baby.
We added "Please, no gifts, but we hope you will stop by to see the baby, and to have a cup of coffee with us! We'd love it!"
With older folks the gifts tend to be funny, and not anything that is needed. I would leave it with
"no gifts please"
When my parents celebrated their 50th anniversary, they really didn't want a fuss, so I got their address book and I wrote to everyone asking them to send Mom and Dad a card. I said "Please, no gifts...just a card letting Mom and Dad know how you are doing." That was a complete success. Cards rolled in. One or two sent token gifts, but the cards were better than any gifts because they came from so many dear, older friends.
People are funny about not sending flowers at a funeral too, but when you say in lieu of flowers, most forget to donate to a charity.
I agree with others who have said it might be best to leave any directions of how to give a gift, after you ask for no gifts. Hopefully, no matter what you decide to do, friends of the older couple will simply be overjoyed that they have found each other and are getting married. You will do the right thing!

formula (if needed), diapers and wipes :) That is my 5 month old daughters main gift this year :) If you want a toy you would want more teether type toys. Bibs are always nice because it seems you can never have enough :) If you want to buy clothes I recomend buying 6 months and up that way he can grow into them. Socks, hats, or anything that you can help keep the little one bundled up is a good choice also!!! Too many I know!!

What is the perfect 60th birthday gift for my mom!?

My mom is turning 60 and I need to get her a great gift. For my dad's 60th, I went back to his alma mater where he played baseball and got clippings of his "glory days" along with a picture and had it framed. He loved it and mom jokingly said "Can't wait to see what I am going to get!" So, the pressure is on. Help!

for girls you can get, like jewlery with their name on it (bangle) or a necklace for when they are older, but for a boy, you could maby get:

Nah, just show up, bring your congratulations and if you feel particularly moved, you might send a card of congratulations to the parents. (in the mail of course, polite adults do not hand over cards in person that say exactly what they are saying anyway. And send it before the ceremony)

The ideas of a bible are sweet, however, I don't think she'll be able to read it yet. Why not save that one for her Confirmation or other event in a few years, when she will properly appreciate the specialness of such a gift?

Baby shower for 2nd baby?

Im having a hard time deciding if I should have a 2nd baby shower. My best friend and mom threw my 1st one (3 years ago), which im greatful for. SInce then Ive moved twice and over the years ive donate alot of things and stuff ended up broken/lost so in the end, I have NOTHING from my first shower. Im not expecting large gifts like a crib or anything but it would be nice to celebrate and get some gifts to help out a little. My concern in my daughters 3rd birthday is in June, Which we always have a huge party for, and since my baby is due in September I wanted (If I can decide) my 2nd shower in July/August. But I feel horrible asking people to buy my daughter a gift, then a month later my unborn baby. ALOT of my friends are telling me to have one, but Im having mized emotions about it. I did not. I felt as if between wedding gifts one year and baby shower gifts a year and a half later, we had enough parties thrown for us and enough gifts received. And let me tell you, even when you don't have a shower for your second, people will STILL give you gifts. We had a girl first and a boy second, and people still sent outfits, toys, etc.
Our children also had Christenings which they got money and outfits for. Basically I felt partied out!

Good gift for 1 year old baby girl?

I'd like to buy a gift for a relative's baby girl who's turning 1 soon. They're wealthy, so they have mostly everything, which is why it's hard to shop for them. But anywho, something more then $100 but less than $200. I've thought of jewelry, but we bought her bangles already so.. Also thought of a very pretty musical waterglobe, but kinda not so appropriate for her age.. an adorable toy chest, but kinda don't want to buy her something that will be difficult to return (plus, I dont know her room decor, except that it's white). I don't really want to buy her clothes because we always do anyway, and we just recently bought her a rocking horse. Any ideas?

I think the water globe idea is very cute. It would be something you could add to each year. A nice start to a very tasteful collection you could get her a new one each year on her birthday.

A one year old doesn't know or care about how much a gift costs and in many cases would rather play with the paper or box than a toy. If you want to help the parents out, give her diapers.You could give some money as her parents may have already started a savings account for her.
You could give a stuffed animal or soft doll, but she probably already has plenty of those too. One year olds love to play with stacking toys, so blocks are a good idea.

What are good Christmas gifts for three little girls and a 1 year old baby boy?

One is in Kindergarten, another in second, and the other in 4th.
They're my cousins and over the past years I haven't really given
such great gifts. I mean I try hard, but it's mostly toys and clothes.
What's something that they can keep forever (or more then a couple of years)
and it's memorable? I can't give toys because their parents (not all related) don't want any more toys. I don't want to give them DVDs, either (stuck in front of the TV all day) and music is okay but I really don't like Kids Bop or Hannah Montana for the children. Of course for my baby boy cousin, I'll give him a teddy bear or blanket (he doesn't care, he's happy if you give him something to bang with)

Keep in mind, it can't be pricey and it'll be helpful if parents or people with the same experiences answered. (I was thinking of getting them a baby doll, I remember my first one(: but then they own like 20)

- pick out a animal of your choice to stuff
- pick out a sound (if you choose)
- grab a felt heart (for the inside of your animal)
- sing a song (for the kids) to jump start their heart and make it your special bear
- stuff it
- bring it to the wash station to brush/fluff it (for the kids)
- pick out an outfit for the bear (if you choose)
- fill out its birth certificate at the computer station
- and go to the cash register to get the box and the birth certificate

As for avoiding toys, if you have any girly girls getting then a nice little jewellery box is great. I know my aunt got one for me as a little girl and I still have it. Same with necklaces and charm bracelets. You don't have to spend a lot to get something nice. My aunt never had a lot of money but she always threw together little packets of jewelry (even plastic stuff for my younger sister). Another option is the classics. Cabbage patch dolls are back and my daughter (2yrs) loves them. Something to think about anyway. =)

at 1 year old they like anything they can push (like a shopping cart or carriage), pull, and dump and fill (like buckets full of snap beads, etc... that they can dump, refill, carry around, and dump out again (its a toddler thing lol). baby shower etiquette?

Hi all. I have a few questions regarding the number of baby showers and etiquette.
I have 4 people throwing different showers. I feel a little greedy, but they are all separate groups and wanted to throw them for the different groups. I.e. work, friends, family, husband's work. I would combine, but the work ones would not combine well. My husband works in a bar and I work in human services. My family lives on the other side of the state from my friends, so there really is no way to combine that one either. I am only inviting personal friends to the friend shower and only family to the family shower, so people do not think I am trying to get gifts out of them.
Also, I read online that I am supposed to give thank you gifts. What are some cute/good ideas for gifts to give the hostesses?

I dont think you are being greedy at all - I can totally understand you not wanting to mix people who do not know eachother, and the travel involved for some people so what you are doing is logical AND convenient!

Thank you gifts do not have to be given to each and every guest, but it is a nice idea to give thank you gifts to your hostesses. I would make up little gift baskets with a bottle of wine, some cute jewellery (beaded cute jewellery is normally cheaper), lipgloss or lipstick, photoframes etc.

Also, make sure you grab a couple of extra little gifts such as jewellery, movie tickets, make up etc to use as small prizes in games that you may play at your baby shower.

Some good games to play include guessing the weight of the baby when it is born, asking your guests to cut a piece of string to fit around your belly and the closest fit wins etc.

Ok my wife and I eloped so we never had a wedding shower and we donât know the protocol. We are having our first baby and we are having two showers, one my coworkers are throwing for me and one her best friend is throwing. Do we give a gift as a thank you to the hostess or instead of the plain Thank You Cards get a really nice one from the store or what.

Just a card is fine. acknowledge all the work she put into the shower. Try and remember or even write down the gift that were given so that when you do the thank-you cards for the rest of the guest youc an thank them for thier specific gift....it's always nicer when you make it personal. If you have the money and you feel the need or want there is nothing wrong with something small to say thank-you to the hostess but it's not nessisary. A lot of people when expecting are on a tight budget and don't have the money to spend.

Christmas gifts for mom? ?

I've already gotten her a new bicycle, two t-shirts and one sweatshirt from my college, and her favorite tennis shoes from the '90s, that are hardly made anymore.

I already blew a lot of my budget on the bike, and the shoes were almost $80. I want to get her a few more things, since this is the first year I've really had money to spoil her at Christmas. I just want to pay her back for the $1500 she'd spend on me every Christmas.

make her a coupon book. Make the coupons for things you know your mom will enjoy like...

My kids did this last year for my b-day I redeemed them as I needed to. My favorite was "movies with me" ( they told me to pick a movie then rented it, popped me popcorn and had soda) just spent some time with me and I didn't have to play host.

does anyone know of any good baby shower gift for twin boys?
my sister in law is having twin boys and i am not sure on what to get her...also, i went to a baby shower one time and there was a lady who gave the mom to be a present every so often and each one had a tag on them with something to do with the gift in the box. i remember the first one i think it was something like..good morining mommy its time to wake up, and the gift inside was a baby moniter..its time to get me dressed mommy and it was clothes..has anyone ever heard of that? i need ideas on what too do please help! REMEMBER THEY ARE TWIN BOYS!
gosh..so i want to have some ideas on the thing where a give her a gift threwout the day...but i cant think of how to start it off..it starts of with, goodmorning mommy its time to wake up..what would i give her then?

Google a Diaper Cake (diapercake.com) to get a mental picture of what I am talking about here. There are many different types to look at.

Buy the diapers (two packs)
Baby pins (different colors to hold the together)
Small baby items (rattle, booties, nail clippers, pacifiers, etc)
Baby blankets (two-one for each)
Something special for the mother to put in top

Just fold and lay the diapers out and fasten together (you are going to fold long ways) - put baby blankets inside and whatever else you can come up with to stuff the diaper cake with. Roll it up so you have the bottom layer.

Put a diaper on top of the bottom layer to cover the inside surprises.

Top layer is smaller of course. Stuff with things for the mom to be.

Once you have it in two layers you can fasten the small baby things on with baby pins all around the cake in different places. Get some blue and yellow ribbon to finish the decorating.

For the very top of the cake get a yellow rubber ducky. Write a special note for the mom and place it on top in blue to set nest to the yellow ducky.

This will be a conversation piece of the party and the mom to be will have a wonderful time pulling out the contents.

Use your imagination when decorating. Get some family members to go in with you on this since the cost can rise having to stuff it. That is why I suggested two blankets for the bottom.

Fill baby bottles with candy and add a ribbon.
Make cookies or brownies. A 6 - 8 per winning game.

Then there are baby shower specific ones like these which are fun and related to the event.

Birthday gifts for moms?

My husband and I always buy our moms a gift for their birthdays. My mom always asks for a small item...less than 30 dollars. She knows that we have bills and doesn't want us spending our money on her. When it comes to my mother in law, my husband feels that he has to spend 100 dollars. We just had a fight about how much to spend on his mother and I knocked it down from 100 to 50 dollars (which in my mind, is still too much). I feel that my husband has to make up for him never seeing her and thus wanting to spend 100 dollars. I am also bitter with this woman because she never ever recognizes my birthday...but expects everyone to recognize hers. She never says to us...you shouldn't spend that kind of money on me...you just bought a house...or anything like that.
Is it wrong for me to argue with my husband about a gift for his mom or am I right?

I think the best solution should be is you and your husband sit down and decide a dollar amount that you two can afford to spend on each person at their birthday and that is the amount you spend. His mother shouldn't get a higher dollar amount than anyone else. Nip this in the butt so that you two do not keep arguing over it because it is going to be something that comes up every year at her birthday time. If he wishes to go over the dollar amount you two come up with as set birthday dollar amount for all birthdays then he can save some of his own money on the side to accommodate a lavish give to give his mother if he chooses to do so. It is rude that your MIL does not recognize your birthday but do not stoop to her level. Be the better person and give a modest gift to her at her birthday. Most mothers are like your own mother and do not expect outrageous gifts. It sounds like your MIL is somewhat selfish anyway and that is something you cannot change in her.

My 8 month old baby has a diaper rash!! What do I put on it?

My daughter is 3 months old and she started getting a diaper rash a few days after I brought her home from the hospital I had Balmex since it was given to me as a gift and it works great for my daughter. I know some people have to try a few different brands before they like a particular one. What we also did was put the ointment after every diaper change for a few days that way we made sure it cleared up! Good luck.
