A good Christmas gift for my mom?

Amy

Ok, so what would really help is specifically some links of anything that would be nice. Also, i think it might be better if it's not jewelry, because she has tons of that already. I have a budget ($15-$20) so nothing extremely expensive either.

By the way- she's 54

Christmas gifts for mom? ?

Kendra!

I've already gotten her a new bicycle, two t-shirts and one sweatshirt from my college, and her favorite tennis shoes from the '90s, that are hardly made anymore.

I already blew a lot of my budget on the bike, and the shoes were almost $80. I want to get her a few more things, since this is the first year I've really had money to spoil her at Christmas. I just want to pay her back for the $1500 she'd spend on me every Christmas.

I don't have much money left, so what are some cheap gift ideas that don't look cheap? Under $20?

Answer
all moms like something hand made....I say make a batch of cookies - her fav..or her fav dessert. You have all ready bought enough...now give something from the 'heart'.....as a mom - I think something you make will be very special.

Answer
Google a Diaper Cake (diapercake.com) to get a mental picture of what I am talking about here. There are many different types to look at.

Buy the diapers (two packs)
Baby pins (different colors to hold the together)
Small baby items (rattle, booties, nail clippers, pacifiers, etc)
Baby blankets (two-one for each)
Something special for the mother to put in top

Just fold and lay the diapers out and fasten together (you are going to fold long ways) - put baby blankets inside and whatever else you can come up with to stuff the diaper cake with. Roll it up so you have the bottom layer.

Put a diaper on top of the bottom layer to cover the inside surprises.

Top layer is smaller of course. Stuff with things for the mom to be.

Once you have it in two layers you can fasten the small baby things on with baby pins all around the cake in different places. Get some blue and yellow ribbon to finish the decorating.

For the very top of the cake get a yellow rubber ducky. Write a special note for the mom and place it on top in blue to set nest to the yellow ducky.

This will be a conversation piece of the party and the mom to be will have a wonderful time pulling out the contents.

Use your imagination when decorating. Get some family members to go in with you on this since the cost can rise having to stuff it. That is why I suggested two blankets for the bottom.

Good luck.

Gift ideas for Mother's Day??? Anyone?

emmadoll

I need some gift ideas for mom, the woman who has everything. Please do not suggest flowers or candy... that's boring. Thanks!

Answer
How about a gift certificate to a spa, if you have the money like a 150 dollar one so she can get a nice massage and maybe a new hairstyle.

If money is tight how about a year magazine subscription that has something to do with one of her hobbies, like a gardening magazine, cooking, baking, home decorating, etc. You can get a year subscription for about 20 dollars and its thoughtful and not just like flowers that are gone in a week..a magazine subscription keeps giving. You can right in the card something cheesy like I got you a gift that will be there the whole year just like you are for me :)

Or something for around the house a cappuccino maker? A new set of pots and pans? George forman grill? New dishes? New bath towels? A new comforter set? A maid service for a month so she doesn't have to clean. New vacuum cleaner? A gas gift card, or grocery store gift card, a few books on things shes interested in, a series of a tv show she likes on dvd, (lol ok I think I'm giving you my list of what I would like- maybe it can spark an idea though..)

hope i helped :)

Fathers day DIY gift?

(insert ni

have any ideas/suggestions?

I wanna get him something too. something small. a gift card, etc. something not too expensive either, less than 25$ ??
help please! thnx alot!!
:D

Answer
Add to any gift a list of the reasons why you appreciate him. Perhaps have it inscribed on a wall plague.

Please don't get a joke card. In my 20+ years of working with fathers, it has been rare that a joke card that makes fun of his abilities is really appreciated.

I wrote this to "Dear Abby" for Father's Day, March 19, 2005.

APPRECIATION FOR JOB WELL DONE IS WHAT FATHERS WANT TO HEAR

DEAR ABBY: Today is Father's Day, so why don't we try to do more for dear old Dad than give him the usual greeting card that promotes the idea that all dads are imbeciles, followed by a collect call to see what he thought of the card. (Father's Day is the day when the most collect calls are made.)

We should treat our fathers the way we treat our mothers on Mother's Day and show them we appreciate them for being there. Yes, you probably tell your father all the time that you love him, but the minds of men work differently. Anyone can say "I love you," but as men, knowing that we are appreciated for a job well done is what really gets us teary-eyed.

Something else you can do -- especially you sons out there (but daughters can do it, too) -- is to make sure Dad has been to the doctor for a checkup, including depression screening. This can go a long way toward making sure he's here on Father's Day next year.

I wasn't raised by my father, but by a stepfather. Although we did not see eye-to-eye on many things, I would not be the person I am today if it were not for him. This man, who spent years climbing on top of heavy construction equipment to prepare the ground for many of the homes, businesses, roads and highways of Southern California, now finds it difficult to get into a car. Although none of the houses or roads have his name on them, they are all testaments to his life and the lives of men like him.

So today, let's do something extra for Dad, without him pulling out his wallet to pay for it. -- George McCasland, Overland Park, Kansas

***************************************************************
Remember, there's a lot of us fathers sitting in nursing homes whose children live too far away to visit. Contact an activities director about volunteering Sunday morning. Read a list out loud about why you appreciated your father.

DIY Baby Gift Ideas?

Jello

Hi~
My cousin is pregnant so I am planning to give her a small homemade present. Any simple but sweet DIY ideas?

Thanks!

Answer
Get a basket with a handle that stays upright (pretty easy to find this time of year) and put in a water bottle (the reuseable sports kind) and some snacks, a couple of baby blankets/burp clothes (you can make your own). A book or two and/or a book of stuff you have written/inspiration poetry you assemble/jokes, whatever.

And a list of local numbers like La Leche League, poison control, motherisk (drug safety during lactation)

and other resources that are useful for a new breastfeeding mom.

Because I can't tell you how many times new mom's sit down, get settled and then are really thirsty but they can't move *lol*. Eventually you learn to nurse on the go but until then its good to have a drink, snacks, remotes, burp cloths, etc all in one place.

You could also include:
*A nursing necklace (you want big brightly coloured beads, etc for the baby to play with instead of your other nipple or your hair)
*Onsies with funny breastfeeding slogans (but personally I find these annoying)

When would be a good time to plan a baby shower for my uncle's girlfriend?

EllieC

I really wanna throw my uncle's girlfriend a suprise baby shower but her baby's due at the beggining of March. It's only a little bit after Christmas and i dont no how and when i'd plan it especially without her knowing. Also I dont no much about baby shower's. Any ideas?

Answer
If it's her 1st baby and first/only shower I wouldn't do a surprise. I'm sure she would love to know that she is actually getting a shower and having her baby celebrated. If it's a 2nd baby I think a surprise is awesome. However, if you do stick to the surprise thing, I would get your Uncle in on it to help you pick out a day, etc. Also, any time after she is 30 weeks pregnant is a good time for a shower. You don't want to do it too late because women get tired in the 3rd trimester/ like to set things up, wash the clothes and get things ready.

As far as the shower goes, you don't have to do much to make it great. You could either do evites or you could do paper invitations. You can find some cute ones at Target. Get balloons.. they decorate a space really nicely and for not a lot of money (not sure if that is an issue?). You could do boy colored or girl colored balloons if you know what it is, and stick with both pink and blue or neutral colored balloons if it's a surprise gender. You could do one helium type balloon with "It's a Girl!" or "It's a Boy!" or "Welcome Baby" on it to mix in with the colored balloons.

What time you have it will dictate food... if you do it at lunch time or dinner time people will expect heavier and more food. In between hours, you could do light snacks... chips and dip, some fruit, etc. You could do "baby" food... baby carrots, mini-M&Ms, baby watermelon balls. Or you could serve strawberry icecream and pink cake for a girl. Sam's Club, Food Lion, Wal-mart.. all have good cakes for not much money. $20 at Sam's you can get a Baby Shower cake, personalize it and feed lots of people with it. If you do an evite, you can set a certain amount or certain types of food and people can opt to either bring food or not, it's great. You could serve soda, diet soda. Or you could do a punch which you make by using sherbert icecream and adding some sprite or 7-up to it. The "punch" is supposed to be mostly icecream.

Pick 1-3 games from the internet. Popular ones are guessing the flavor of baby food, guessing how big mommy is using ribbon, putting chocolate candies in a diaper and microwave that for 5-10 seconds and have people guess the candy in it. Fill a baby bottle with M&Ms and have people guess how many are in there.. the person who wins gets the bottle filled with candy (there are bottles you can get for $1 at target). Have a few prizes - one of each game - you could do bags of candy (colored hershey's kisses, just an idea).

So basically....... have people sign in a booklet or on a special paper when they get there, serve the snacks and cake immediately (who wants to wait, plus some people might leave early), play 3 games, then open gifts. Or you could intersperse the games and the gifts to break it up a little. Then you could either have a take away favor for guests or not...... doesn't matter.

I need some help with Christmas gift ideas!!! Please help(:?

merf

Alright, so let me just say I am 18, working a part time job, so I don't have a LOT of money. I need some cheap, good ideas, because I have a long list of people.
Here's what I've got...

I'm just going to put numbers and what that person is like!(: (Some, I have ideas for, so just let me know what you think of my idea) AGE IN PARENTHESIS
1. (18) she likes the clothes I wear, and we just became friends again, so I decided buying her some shirts or pants or something like that.
2. She is 3 months old, and I know babies are easy to buy for, just idk what to get a three month old. Her "theme" is pooh.
3. (18) This is my best friend, and I decided maybe a BFFFFF Picture frame or like one of those big pictures from walgreens. something like that.
4. This is my best friend's baby. He is 1, but he has SO MANY TOYS. Their hosue is like overflowing with toys, and they don't have that big of a house. Thing is, I don't really think they "need" anything for him. ): HELP.
5. Okay, this is a married couple(19 and 21). They are both really good friends of mine, but I'm not sure if I should do separate gifts, or one gift for both of them. The problem with separate gifts is I have no idea what they want, and neither do they. They want expensive things, but I can't afford things that are like $500. I need an idea for a married couple, but something pretty inexpensive.
6. The married couple's boys. The 2 year old is my little turkey (I have helped a lot with him and he's the best little nephew ever) I just don't know what to get him. Maybe a toy...? But what kind of toy? Then they have an almost 8 month old. I really don't know what to get him. I barely know him. I know toys are good, again... but... what's a good idea, that isn't overdone... maybe one big toy for the two of them? idk ):
7. My momma (41) she's very senitmental, and she likes coffee, so I thought maybe a coffee cup that was specially made.. idk!
8. My step dad who is pretty much my dad (41) he likes a lot of things. I was thinking about a wine cooler, but it's kind of expensive... So I don't think I can afford something like that.. ): Last year I did a hallmark magnet that said "anyone can be a father, but it takes a special man to be a daddy" So I don't really want to buy something so small again, I want it to be something he would like, but not expensive... ugh
9. My brother's step mom (45?) She is very young at heart and she is very important in my life. I want to get something to show her that I appreciate her, but not something stupid..
10. Brother #1 (16) we have pretty similar personalities, but he's into things I'm not. Like weed... and cigarettes. But then of course he's into old cars and into fixing things and... idk what a sixteen year old boy would want...!!!
11. Brother #2 (19) I asked him what he wants and he said a dirtbike (wtfff, i'm poor) hahaha. he's sort of got that whole cowboy thing going, which I find hilarious... But he is a total dirtbike guy. He listens to bands similar to slipknot, but then there's bands like twangy country. I'm not really sure what he's trying to be, to be completely honest.... HAHAHA. Help ):
12. Brother #3 (17) he is an xbox guy. like... that's all he does. sometimes he convinces my mom to let him stay home cause he has a headache from staying up all night playing xbox and he'll spend that whole day playing xbox.... *facepalm*
13. My sister. (3) I pretty much decided on cute little girly things for her. haha.
14. My omi (75) she "wants nothing". She grew up in east germany, from 1937-1959. She's not your average grandma. She has plenty of coffee cups though. She likes crosswords, and gardening.. Help.
15. My uncle and his girlfriend. (43 &idk) They are an odd bunch.... I would like to get them something, problem is... I am not close to my uncle... at all.... -_-
16. My friend....(18) She loves dogs and cats, she works at starbucks... She never likes to do ANYTHING. like, it's obnoxious. But she's been there for me through my move (she lives where I live now) so I would like to get her something. She likes nailpolish, but.. she has so many colors, IDK what she doesn't have... she's very girly, but extremely open and loud. HELP.

I apologize for the length of this, but I REALLY need help!!! Thanks (:

Answer
1. $15 gift card to the store she'd like, pair it with earrings or put it inside a cute purse/makeup bag from the store.

2. Target has some great baby stuff! I don't know they relationship, but they have bibs that say "I love my Auntie!" Put a cute bib and a pair of sucks and pacifier together, all matching in color or theme.

3.http://media-cache-lt0.pinterest.com/upload/225320787578529131_Wri9nAQV_b.jpg (This is an example of a fun frame that can be made for less than $5 with cheap stuff from a craft store...add your names somewhere for a personal touch!)

4. Find a picture of the baby with your friend and add it to a sweet frame. Mom's love pictures of the their kids! Especially if you put it in a cute family themed or homemade frame.

5. Buy a movie they might both like, add some candies and popcorn with it in a basket and add a cute card labeling it a "Date Night Kit." If you have the extra money, a snuggie or goofy blanket would be a cute addition.

6. You could get the 2 year old a movie that he might like and pair it with some gummies or something he would eat! Kind of a matching gift with the parents. For the 8 month old, a bib or cute onezie would be perfect.

7. There are ways to personalize your own coffee cup (Google it) or find a really decorative one and pair it with a pretty journal. There are tons of coffee cups and journals on sale at TJMaxx or Marshal's.

8. You could buy a personalized wine topper or at the Hallmark close to me they have funny wine glasses.

9. Hallmark is full of appreciative gifts, but also a nice candle is great. Add a cheesy note like "You warm my heart" or something thoughtful goes a long way.

10. Go to a book store and find a specialty book or magazine on old cars. They have tons.

11. Be a smart a$# and get him a mini dirtbike... like dirtbike ornament or something like that. Sounds like he likes music, so an itunes gift card taped to his favorite box of candy may be perfect.

12. Buy him Microsoft points, they come in gift card form and are sold at Gas Stations and major retailers like Target. Or Walmart has good sales on headsets and controller packs.

13. Sounds like you got that one figured out...

14. Get her a cute gardening set with a pack of seeds of your favorite flower, that way you can be apart of her garden.

15. Restaurant gift cards are perfect for the random family you aren't close with!

16. If you have a TJ Maxx around you, you could get make her a little spa kit of nice nail polish and body wash, lotions, and such. They have great deals on name brand beauty products.

Can't believe I just wrote all this out but hey, hope it helps. Merry Christmas, and good luck!

Jewish baby naming ceremony for girl?

Jackie

What should I plan on for the naming ceremony? Does it cost much to have it at a synagogue. My husband and I don't go to the synagogue on a regular basis and neither of us have been to a naming ceremony so were sort of clueless.

Answer
If you are members of the synagogue it is covered as part of your membership. A gift to the synagogue (cash) in honor of the naming would be nice. If you are naming the child after a relative then you give the donation in honor of that person as well as the baby.

If you are not members of the synagogue then you need to talk to the Rabbi and administrator. You will not get a freebie like members do.

I would think a nice card with a twenty in would be appropriate. Maybe write something like, college fund or something cute like that on it.

Baby gift ideas? 3rd shower?!?

Female

I need some cheap baby gift ideas for my friends baby shower?

I already did a diaper cake for her first boy.
An essentials kit for her second boy.
And now she is having a girl.

This is her 3rd baby shower in under 3 years and with everyone else around me having kids I'm out of ideas. She's the type who wants as many as God will give her (even tho they are not church goers at all....). So she usually announces a pregnancy three months after each birth. But that's their choice.

I have got her nice clothes before but every time I see her kids they are running in diapers. So I don't know about clothing. And Iv done essential items kit before

I'm out of ideas and on a super tight budget. Any unique options for a small cheap ish but nice gift?

And out of opinion is it normal to have a huge baby shower with every child? I thought you only do it once or with each gender?

Answer
Even if you made a diaper cake before, you could still do a girly one. You do not need to add much more than diapers and lots of ribbons if you are on a tight budget.
Or just do a small one tier diaper cake and put a cuddly girly toy in the middle.
A homemade baby book gift basket also is relatively cheap but does not look cheap.
Here are a few more ideas on inexpensive baby gifts and inexpensive baby gift baskets:
http://www.best-baby-gifts.com/cheap-baby-gifts.html

If you feel comfortable babysitting, why not give her a coupon booklet with a few babysitting coupons. Since this is her third baby she'll certainly be in need of help. You can also give her a coupon for homemade dinners. You'll find further ideas and explanations at the a.m. website.

Hope my ideas helped!

Answer
my daughter wore size 1 until she was 4.5 months old, but people always say she's tiny. babies should double birth weight by 6 months (not 3 months as the above poster said) and triple by 1 year.

Scriptures for baby dedication?

Q. Looking for Bible scriptures, especially to go with the song In My Arms song by Plumb...which is about how a child is safe in their parents arms or a person is safe in God's arms, no matter what is going wrong all around them :) Also the ones about how children are created by God, for God, etc etc...

Answer
Numbers 6:24-26
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.

Deuteronomy 4:9
Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them sup from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7
These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

Psalm 22:10
From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God.

Psalm 139:13-18
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous - how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!

Isaiah 44:3
For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.

Mark 10:13-16

He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them."

Luke 1:80
The child grew and became strong in spirit.

Luke 2:40
The child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

Acts 2:38-39
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far offâfor all whom the Lord our God will call."

Ephesians 6:1-4
Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. Honor your father and mother. This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Do I send Thank You cards for baby dedication gifts?

JennaJ

We dedicated our 8 month baby girl to the Lord on Sunday...this is a christian dedication sometimes called a "dry baptism" anyhow, we had a luncheon "reception" party at our home and most people brought cards with money or a small gift like an outfit....

My mom and I are all about mailing thank you cards however, she mentioned for a christening/dedciation it's not customary to send thank you cards, as it is a religous event. Anyone have any experience with this?

Answer
We are dedicating my 5 month old son in September. I would definitely send Thank You notes out. I am not sure of the custom, but I think you should always send thank you notes out after you receive a gift.

Baby shower question?

notme

My mom is throwing me a shower in 2 weeks. I am going to be 30+ weeks by then. After the baby is born, my boyfriends mom will throw me another one because, as she says, in her culture (they are Native Canadian, as in Indians) they dont believe in haing baby showers before the baby is born because you cant buy stuff for a baby before it is born, because it doesnt make sense. I have no idea what she means, but she said you cant buy diapers until after its born (???) or clothes, or anything. I dont see the rational in this, but I dont care because she is good to be having me another shower. Anyway she told me that she will come to the one my mom is having for me but that she isnt buying me anything until after the baby is born. She said "maybe i will just give you money, but I wont buy anything for the baby until its born". Like I said I appreciate her throwing me another shower, and it isnt about the gifts, but I feel like it's going to make the other people at the shower, wonder why she didnt bring anything. And I keep thinking it is going to be akward. Anyway, what would you be feeling in this situation? I am just kind of confused because I dont understand why someone would think you cant buy something for a baby before it is born. She said that it doesnt make sense to do so.

Answer
It's really just her culture and the way she was raised. I wouldn't worry about it and I doubt people will ask questions, especially if she gives you a card.

Although it doesn't make much sense that she will give you money for the baby before he/she is born, but she wont by the baby anything. I dont understand it either, but I would just nod and smile and not worry about it because its just how she is.

Received favors at an Indian baby shower, any meaning?

Joanie K

I just attended a baby shower for an Indian couple. At the end the mother-to-be gave me a bag of favors. I was wondering if there was any meaning or symbolism behind the gifts, they were:
-a banana
-a large leaf of some sort
-yellow snack mix
-a silver coin in a pouch (not sure if it's a rupee or not)
-two pieces of sweet stuff/dessert
-some sort of a crushed up nut, very hard and not eatable, I tried :)

Thank you to anyone that answers!
One additional note, it was a Hindu Indian couple.

Answer
haha, ya it may sound a bit weird to you, getting a bag of fruits. In India, almost any major event requires a religious ceremony(which is called a pooja). In a pooja, the priest asks hindu gods to give luck, prosperity, etc. to whatever the ceremony is for. The food you got is kinda like 'blessed food/gifts'. The leaf is probably a betel leaf(throw it out), the snack mix is good (its called chaat, it might be a bit spicy for u), The silver coin is a rupee if it has a lion statue on it. I know all this must sound pretty wierd, but i hoped it helped

Have you ever been invited to a "baby gender reveal party" with a gift registry?

Chelsea

It is starting to get ridiculous. People around here are having 1/2 birthday parties, such as a kid's 6.5 birthday party my son was invited to, Easter and Halloween like Christmas now, with kids even asking for bikes, and last week I got an invitation to a baby gender reveal party for next week and it has a registry, but when I looked at the registry, it was more for the mom than the baby with maternity clothes on the list, breast pads, a breast pump, even af freaking $200 rocking chair with ottoman to rock the baby in. This is not her baby shower, oh no. That will be coming up in late september and there is no confusion about that as it was spelled out on the invitation. When did people get so gift grabby? I have never heard of such a party. Have you ever attended one?

Answer
Yah that is very odd. I have never been to a gender reveal party but I have heard of them. I would deffinitely not buy her a gift for that if she is having a baby shower too. I think these gender reveal parties are a cool idea to get people together but I think having that and then a shower is a bit much. I thought people mostly had those parties on a second baby where as they would not be getting a shower.

Ideas for baby gender reveal at Thanksgiving.?

Gray

Going to my parents for Thanksgiving and I want to announce our baby's gender... We are finding out early with a 3D ultrasound so no one will suspect we already know. I'm looking for something creative, maybe even Thanksgiving themed.

Anyone have a great idea? I'm open to pretty much anything!

Answer
I found this awesome link on Pinterest. Its actually Christmas themed, but you could always say its an early Christmas gift to everybody!

Wrap a baby onesie that is for the correct gender (so something obviously like sports or a princess) or you could probably find one that says "Its a boy! (or girl!)" somewhere. Then you guys either open together or have one of the grandparents to be open it. That way everyone can find out your "present" together!

Kinda cheesy, but I think cheesy ideas are the best when it comes to pregnancy announcements!

Here's the original link. I tried to alter it because it sounds like you already know the gender.

What's the dopest possible baby shower gift I can give?

Natalie C

For my friend's baby shower I want to give the best, dopest, most expensive gift possible. Ideas? It has to be pretty flippin' legit 'cause this baby is super important, we've been waiting for my friend to have a baby for like 6 years and we're all beside ourselves with excitement now(:

Answer
The best gift I ever received was a white laundry basket, decorated in the color ribbon for the baby, you know blue or pink, and in it was filled with everything you could think of that a baby might need. Blankets, rompers, socks, diapers, ointment, baby lotion, baby shampoo, wipes, little baby toys. Choices are limitless! You may think the most expensive is the way to go, but the mom will appreciate all the little necessities that are sometimes overlooked.

Baby shower.....what?

taryntino

I will have to throw a baby shower for a good friend of mine some months from now. I've never been to one and I know nothing about them. Someone told me there were games involved.
I'm looking for a clear idea of what its about. What will people expect me to do? I assume drinking is inappropriate, right? Help me out, Im not much for planning social events and I am definately not a baby person.
She's a good friend and I really want to make this not lame for her.

Answer
Okay, baby showers. Yes they are mostly about the games. That and the gifts. Everyone brings a gift for the baby. You go and drink punch and have little snacks.. like any reception type thing. Then you play these games that have to deal with babies. There are little gifts and prizes for those who win(small little things for a girl... becuase only girls come to baby showers.. such as little lotions, maybe decorated box, perfume.. that type of thing.) Games that i have seen done are:

The Word Game: First, everyone has a little token. Whether it be a litle plastic wring, a sticker, a little tiny plastic pacifier on a necklace.. doesnt matter. The goal of the game is not to say the word "baby" (or whatever word you pick) for the whole shower.. which is kinda fun. But when someone hears you say the word, they get to take your token. Then at the end of hte shower, whoever has the most tokens, wins.

The Baby Food Tester: For this game you need to go out and buy little jars of baby food. Probably the ones that only have one thing in them. Not the meals. You will take them either out of the jars, or take off the labels, so that people dont know what they are. Everyone will sit in a circle and try to figure out which flavors each one is.. whether by tasting it(you might need little sample spoons or something), smelling it, or just looking. Whatever. Whoever has the most correct wins.

The Diaper Game : haha. i loved this one, but all of my sisters thought it was disgusting. But what it is, you need soem diapers, all different kinds of chocolate bars and a microwave. Haha, you smush up the candy bar in the diaper.. melt it a little and everything, make it look authentic. lol... and then everyone takes turns smelling it or looking at it and trying to figure out what type of bar it is.. use snickers, and milky ways, and take 5 and whatevaer other kind of chocolate bar. This is hilarious. Some people refuse to put their noses up to it. Anyway, whoever has the most right, wins.

The Bottle Game: Youll need bottles and some kind of juice. For this one you will give everyone who wants to do it a bottle half full or less (cuz this takes FOREVER if you do more) and have them race to see who can finish off the bottle fastest. Only drinking from it.

The Belly Guesser: you have everyone try to figure out how many squares of toilet paper it would take to get around the pregnant ladies belly. This one is funny becuase EVERYONE guess to low. .. they dont want any hurt feelings. lol. But yeah, you actually do it to her afterwards, and whoever is the closest wins.

How Many in the Jar: You put a bunch of whatever in a jar(maybe diaper pins, pacifiers, something babyish) and have everyone guess how many there are. Once again, whoever is closest wins.

Okay, so those are just some of the games that i remember. But you dont have to use all of them. A baby shower isnt supposed to have a BUNCH of games over and over agian. You mostly just sit around, chilling out and snacking, everyone talking.. and then you play a coupel games in between.. some people will say that they dont want to play, and thats fine.

Then after that you will spend a long time opening all the gifts and oohing and aahhing with each other. Their pretty much just socializing.

One little tip though, get more than one prize for each game you decide to play.. becuase there is a definite posibility for ties. Just in case, you know?

Alrighty, well i just wrote ALOT and i hope that it helped you. If you need anymore help planning the shower i would love to give more advice. You can go ahead and email me over this. And good luck!

*edit*
Oh, and i was looking at that website and i forgot about one.. This one is super super awesome. That baby book idea. You have a book that each person who comes can write some kind of advice on there. Its a great thing for a new mom. Especially when there are older more knowing guests there, such as friends of the mom or something.

Co-worker originally from India recently gave birth, what is appropriate to give her?

Shell

My fiance works with a woman who gave birth yesterday to her son. The couple is relatively modern but still traditional enough that her mother came to stay with her for 6 weeks. (Its tradition for the new mom to 'go home' and be taken care of by her mother, but it just wasn't possible for her, so they improvised.) I'd like to get her a card and maybe small baby gift. Would that be okay? What phrases may be nice and traditional to write in the card as celebration for a new son? Any insight is appreciated. I've looked online and can't really find any information. Thanks!

Answer
A baby gift basket

and a nice card...

Please dont try to give "cultural" gifts..

You can get them so wrong..

Give as you would do for other friends !!

Gifts to bring to India?

Curious2

I live in America. The school I go to offers mission trips to India, Africa, and local. India interests me, and I hope to go. It is one of the poorest cities, so I have heard. What should I bring for the babies, kids, teens, and adults? Please be specific with what to get for each gender. I want to give them little gifts :) I heard they are very accepting!
By the way, I can only have two suitcases up to 50 lbs. each, and thats for 1 month.

Christmas gift for a pregnant teen?

renee

I'm doing a project for church and I decided to do it on a teen mother what are essentials I can give a mother to be? I don't have more then $400 but I want to get the most/best things she'll need. What are the top 10-15 essentials even if I'd need more money!!!
Please respect others feeling and respect me enough to be positive

Answer
The top 10 things for a baby/mom under 400 dollars?
-Diapers, and as its been said buying sizes other than newborn is always helpful.
-Wipes, you can buy them in bulk for fairly cheap which is good because she will go through SO MANY of them.
-Baby Tylenol, they have one specifically for babies 0-36 months and it is extremely useful.
-Thermometer, they have underarm, forehead, and even pacifier thermometers for babies.
-Bottles & formula if she is choosing to do that.
-Pacifier (again, if she chooses to use them, some moms don't like them so it's good to ask beforehand)
-Carrier/Sling, some of these can be expensive but you can find them at consignment store fairly cheap. Just something she can wear so the baby is attached to her.
-Clothes are always welcome, even in sizes 3, 6, 9 months and bigger.
If she doesn't have important things you want to help pay for you could look out for car seats & strollers, a bassinet, crib, maybe even parenting/BFing classes and other essential items for having a baby.

12 year old girl gift ideas?

My little sister turns 12 in a few weeks, i've saved up roughly $50-60 and she likes cooking (particulary icecream), basketball, and were moving to a hobby farm in a bit where we'll keep layer chickens, cows and horses which she is very excited about. Any ideas for cooking, basketball or chicken raising gifts?

Answer
Cooking-get her a recipe book, some sort of basket or bin, and a bunch of baking ingredients - sugar, food colouring, cocao powder, baking powder, vanilla, flour. It would be cute if you bought her an apron, and wrote her name on it with fabric markers. You could get the book from a book store, the baking stuff from a grocery store, and the apron and markers from an art store.

Basketball-you could get her two basketballs, one pink, and one regular. On the pink one, get permanent markers, and have all her friends and family sign it.

Farm-search up hatcheries near your areas on google. Buy her either a regular baby duck, or chick. They should be around $5 each, probably even cheaper. Name them, buy some chicken feed, the hatchery owner will tell you what else you need to get the chicks. It'll make her responsible, and feel special. You'll obviously have some money left over, so buy her a disposable camera and scrapbook also to track their growth.

Best of luck

Help me pick gifts for baby shower games......?

PM

I am having a baby shower for my niece and I want the gifts to match the games played. For example:
Game- Name that baby food!
Prize- Recipe in a Jar gift

Game- Pass the dirty diaper
Prize- Nice hand soap and chocolate candy

Game- Unscramble these words
Prize- Lap blanket and Activity Book

Ok, so now that you know where I am going with this, here are the games I need help choosing a prize for:

How many baby items can you name?
Prize-________________

Finish this baby rhyme.....
Prize-________________

Guess Mom-to-be's tummy size (using yarn)
Prize-________________

Don't say "baby"
Prize-________________

I want to keep the cost of each prize to around $5 if possible but I am willing to go up to $10. I am also very crafty so if you have an idea that I can make myself I am listening!

Thanks in advance for anyone who can offer some ideas =0)
I want to keep the cost under $10 each and as far as keeping track of people saying "baby", that wont be my job. The mom to be starts off with a pacifier and if someone hears her say "baby" then they get the pacifier, and so on. So the person with the pacifier at the end of 1 hour wins a prize.
The "Guess the tummy size" game, everyone cuts a piece of yarn the size they guess mom's tummy to be. The person with the closest size wins.
Come on people, I know there are some people out there with some good ideas. Have you been to a baby shower? What were some of the prizes given?

Answer
Baby Items - $15 gift card to like starbucks people would love that

Finish this baby ryhme - maybe a puppy haha just kidding even though it would be nice.

Guess mommys tummy size and Dont say baby shouldnt be a prize at the end because i mean theres gonna be alot of people there...how are you gonna keep track of all the people not saying baby. JW

Christmas is coming up and i need some ideas on what i can buy for my newborn nephew. I was thinking of getting him a photo album or a picture with a with blue teddy and his name on it. I've looked up a few sites but they don't really have much. Even a few sites for baby gifts would be much appreciated :)

Answer
Feel free to browse my website specializing in the best baby gifts. I present you with lots of ideas and have helpful tips and recommendations. I do not sell anything directly on my site but just want to help by giving great ideas. I also usually mention where to get my gift ideas, though or I provide links. And I have directions for homemade baby gifts such as diaper cakes or baby gift baskets. There also is a special section on Christmas gifts for babies.

If you want to buy some kind of teddy bear, how about a Steiff cuddly toy? Steiff is known for great quality. They have beautiful cozy toys for baby to cuddle with, such as their cute 'Good Night Dog': http://www.steiffusa.com/productdetail.aspx?productid=238062

my sister just had a beautiful little girl. What is the best gift you recived when you had your baby? i'm wanting to buy her the most practical and helpful item. please tell me what you got that you would recomend to others.
Thanx

Answer
Gro-bags (and also alot of the other bits made by Grobag but esp the grobags themselves) at www.bumpto3.com and Drybibs at www.drybib.co.uk.
These items were both given to us as presents with our first child and were totally fab. We're now using them with our 2nd. I would highly recommend them as cute and practical.
Oh...one thing I was given with my second baby was a Kari-Me at www.kari-me.com and I have no idea how I coped without it with my first baby! I would be lost without any of these 3 things and have bought them as presents for my friends who have had babies who also love them!

Please help me with gift ideas for an almost 1 year old who has everything?

Chelsea

This should be easy for me since my daughters 1st birthday was a couple days ago, but everything my daughter recieved for her birthday, my friends daughter already has. Her grandparents buy her everything!! So i wanted to get her something different and unique. I was thinking about a birthday scroll but i can't order one in time. Any other ideas?

Also i don't want to give gift cards or money for a college fund.. this is for a first birthday and i want to make it special.
Oh, and i prefer buying things, not making them.
Books.. good idea!

Answer
My baby is about to turn 1 as well! He's the second boy, so he has almost everything already. I decided to invest in a real quality toy, something beautiful, classic, and lasting. So I got him a wooden duck that waddles as you pull it on a string. I'll link the site where I got it. They have the most unique yet classic gifts for babies and kids--no cartoons, no branding, just actual toys like you remember them.

Does she have a push or pull toy? They love them in the second year of life.

Baby toy for 1 year old?

Danielle

My daughters 1st bday is in less than 2 weeks and were getting her new carseat about 200 and over 100 for her party. So i dont have much to spend on a gift/toy for her. I really want to get the laugh and learn kitchen but the age is for 6months- 24months. Would it be worth it to get this kitchen or should i consider a toddler kitchen. Or if you have any other ideas that are not too much
she NEEDs a new carseat so why would i save my money on that and her party most of the cost is food along with paper plates cups and what not along with the cake really that is not very much

Answer
I'd go with the laugh and learn since it is more age appropriate. Yes, a toddler kitchen is nice for later, but she can enjoy the laugh and learn NOW. Not only that, but she will learn something in the process and there will be less small parts that you might need to be concerned about. But truly, she won't notice too much if you didn't get her the laugh and learn kitchen either. I got my son a 12 month old friendly fire truck, some clothes, and a foam soccer ball. He just enjoyed pulling the paper and hearing us sing to him! Lol! Still, if you decide to get the kitchen, she will be able to enjoy it, too--it will play music and sound cheerful, she'll be able to explore it and enjoy it too. My son inherited his sister's laugh and learn house and chair, and, at 14 months, he plays with them and enjoys them daily.

InLaw christmas gift help?

They seem like they have everything!

My boyfriend and I have been together for a year and 7 months and were both positive were going to marry in 2 years. My parents are divorce and both remaried so we had to get them gifts too. But his parents Don't really need anything. They are 55 and 54. They said we don't need to get them anything but then his moms says it like she expects us to get her something. We live with them and split all the bills so money is a little short. (Also my boyfriend got me jewelry for Christmas that was $200...) They're the last people we have to buy for other then my step father... If you could help with that that would be great too lol

Answer
Gift baskets and towers are always appreciated and fairly inexpensive. You can buy these at your local grocery store, but for better quality, purchase online. Harry and David's has superb selections and prices start at around $20. http://www.harryanddavid.com/gifts/store/gift_____gift-tower-gift-boxes#:s=priceAsc:p=1
Ask your boyfriend what kind of things they like. You could buy your mother in law a subscription to a magazine like Better Homes and Gardens or Whole Living or something. You could buy the dad a watch (maybe a little pricey but you can check out eBay for new ones that are cheaper) or a cologne- try something really nice from Sephora like Burberry or Giorgio Armani. You could also buy those types of things for your stepfather, too.

Baby shower games?

LA Malaton

does anyone know any fun baby shower games?

Answer
A Baby Shower Puzzle Game Race
We all love to have a puzzle race. The baby shower puzzle race game requires at least 2 toddler puzzles boards, each with the same amount of pieces. When the baby shower guests are ready, take out the puzzle pieces and mix them up on a table. The guests will be fooled into thinking this is an easy game. When you say "go", have 2 guests try to complete their puzzle first. The shower guest who finishes first goes on to the next round and challenges a new guest. Maybe you can add in different puzzles or switch it up as each round goes so as to make it harder on the winner of each round. Continue rounds until a final winner is crowned. The puzzles can then be given to the mom-to-be as a gift for the baby. The winning guest can also get a baby shower party favor as a prize for being the best at the game. This could be a small puzzle that they can call there own for winning the game.

Baby shower games!?!?!?!?!?

Q. Hiii :)
My Aunt's sister is hosting a baby shower for my Aunt. She asked me and my Mom to come up with games to play at the shower. And we have NO idea of what games to come up with!!! So, could you please give me a few suggestions. And I would really appriciate it if you would explain the game too! Thanks.
Love ya Lots :)

Selyna!!!

Answer
Guess the Chocolate - (Materials- 5-10 diapers with 5-10 different types of chocolates). This game is one of the funniest and most popular baby shower games. Have the baby shower host or appointed person moderately melt 5-10 different candy bars separately, placing each one in a diaper to be viewed by everyone. Mark each diaper as A, B, C, D, etc. Have everyone guess which candy is in each of the diapers. Make sure to use some candies that have nuts, toffee, caramel, etc.

Baby Shower Memory Game (Materials: clothesline, clothespins as well as items like baby bottle, pacifier, bib, receiving blanket, shoes, socks, hat, gloves, baby pin, teddy bear, rattle, onesie, sleeper, picture frame to hang up on the clothesline). Hang up a clothesline with all the different baby items. Have two people hold up the line for 1 minute and then take the line down (hide it) and have everyone write down every item they can remember (from memory). Give everyone 3 minutes to write down as many items as they can remember. Bring out the line again and see how many everyone got from their memory.

Baby Gift Bingo (Materials: Square cards with 4 or 5 squares across and down with pictures of baby items in each square - i.e., bottle, pacifier, blanket, clothing, diapers, etc - and a pen for each participant) - This is similar to bingo but is played while the mom opens gifts. Give each baby shower participant a square card with 4 or 5 squares across and down. The very middle is a freebie. All the other squares are filled with baby gift items that the mom may receive while opening her gifts such as pacifier, blanket, clothing, diapers, etc. Each card needs to be a little different in layout of the gifts and some cards have items listed that others don't. This way there will not be 5 people getting the bingo. The goal is to get a line of items across or down, sometimes if nobody is close then let the participants take the four corners as a winner. The person(s) with a line or bingo get a baby shower prize.

Baby Shower Give-Away - (Materials: Envelopes to match the amount of attendees, Paper to Fit Each Envelope, Tub or Basket, Decorating Materials for tub/basket, Pens) - Purchase a nice basket or tub and decorate it with baby type art. Purchase blank white envelopes that have a baby shower theme on them or just plain envelopes. Place the basket or tub on the table at the baby shower and have each baby shower guest fill out the front of the envelope with their address. In each of the envelopes, give them a little paper to write a message or advice for the mother to be. Have each guest leave the envelopes unglued. At the end of the baby shower, have the mommy-to-be select one envelope from the pile and give out a baby shower gift!

The Price is Right - (Materials: Baby products, index cards, pens and paper for each baby shower guest) -Like the game show, purchase 10 different baby items (i.e., baby shampoo, soap, bib, lotion, rattle, pampers). On index cards, write the price of each baby shower item and then randomly place the index cards in front of all of the items. Write a letter next to the price of each item and then have your baby shower guests guess by writing down the item that corresponds to the price. Each guest will write their answer on a piece of paper. The baby shower guest with the most correct corresponding prices wins a prize!

Christmas gifts for parents?!?

1221

I need some suggestions for Christmas gifts for my parents. My mom is into working out. She also likes the usual: purses, clothes, jewelry, etc. My dad likes working in the yard. He doesn't fish or golf or have any obvious hobby that would be easy to buy for. Any suggestions would be helpful! I'm looking to spend around $100 for each of them. Thanks!

Answer
Does you mom need new workout clothes? Maybe a gift certificate to a Sporting Goods Store.

Gift card for you dad to Home Depot or Lowe's or a store like that.

Buy them movie tickets so they can go out and a gift card to a local good restaurant.

A bottle of wine or Champagne?

What's the perfect baby gift!?

My mom is expecting a baby at the end of July, and I need some good ideas for a baby/mom gift that I can give. My parents had children really young, and then they divorced in my teenage years. So now that she is remarried, her new husband wanted children.

I'm just looking for some good ideas for a gift. No too expensive(I'm 22 in college :) Not really rolling in the dough yet)

Answer
From experience, the best "gift" you could give is your service as a baby sitter so your mum and her partner could have some time to themselves!! Trust me, they will value it more than any item of clothing or keepsake.

Wedding gift for my mom?

Adrianne

We're having a hard time coming up with a gift for my mom at our wedding. What do you think of a mother's ring? With my birthstone and my fiance's? They're two shades of green, and green is our wedding color, so it seems like a cool idea... but is it weird to give her a ring that showcases just the two of us? I have a brother and sister too... but we were thinking, this is less a mother's ring, and more of a gift to commemorate our wedding.

Here's what I mean: http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/adriannehamberg/Ring1.jpg

Is this an appropriate gift for a mom? She'll be the only parent in attendance, and she's been really supportive of us.

One last question - she has sensitive skin, if we have this cast in sterling silver, would she still be able to wear it? The gemstones are real, but it's twice as much to have it cast in white gold. She's worth it... but we still need to pinch our pennies for the wedding... :)
I'm not going to leave my fiance out, it's our joint gift for my mom. That would defeat the whole point - the ring is in appreciation for her support of us.
Jenn, I love that first link. Thanks for the suggestions!

Answer
You don't know if she has a problem with sterling silver? If I were you I'd find out from her... I have issues with fake metals but not sterling silver.

If you want to do you and your finance's birthstone I'd do a necklace... not a ring. I think a "mother's ring" should include all the children.

This wasn't what I was thinking but what came up first on a search - http://jewelry.novica.com/necklaces/peridot/peridot-and-emerald-pendant-necklace-lime-flower/110180/

This one is cheap but getting at what I was thinking of http://www.limogesjewelry.com/custom.asp?productid=12351 In the "you may also like" section there's one as a heart but that might be more of something for you to wear than your Mom.

Here's another idea that comes as a ring, earings, pendant and/or charm - http://secure.jamesavery.com/jewelry/search/product/R-1305/Mothers-Love-Ring/ It doesn't involve birthstones but it's just something I like.

Wedding gift for my mom and stepfather?

Any good ideas for a gift from me and my brother?

Answer
For my gift to my parents, I took a photoframe with three openings. In the one I had a picture of me, mom and dad when I was a baby. In the second opening, I had a poem I typed out that was about daughters and their parents. In the last opening, I left open so I could give them a picture of the three of us at the actual wedding. I also included a hand written note with a letter. They cried when they opened it!

Perfect gift for a teacher?

Daisy

I'm a Teacher's Asisstant and I would like to give the teacher I help a gift. Sometimes, she rewards me with trail mix, I personally don't like trail mix but I gratefully accept it because it was nice of her anyways. Other times, she gives me chocolate or a lead pencil. She is a really nice teacher! Now, I want to give her a gift. But what should I get her? It needs to be something cheap because my parents don't like to waste a lot of money on unnessesary things. First, let me give you some details about her that might help.
1) She is young, I'm guessing around her early 30's or late 20's.
2) She likes to wear the latest clothes, she is somewhat of a fashionista.
3) She is the cheerful type.
4) I don't recall seeing her drink coffee.
5) She is Chinese.
6) She's pregnant.
I wanted to get her something for her baby, but I don't know if it's a boy or a girl. So any ideas? And remember something cheap please! What would a teacher like her want to have as a gift?

Answer
You could buy her a book with baby names, a huge Hershey's Kiss (what pregnant women doesn't love that), something from Bath and Body Works, a nice shirt that shows off her baby bump, a bouquet of flowers, a wallet or purse, a laser pointer, or write a poem of appreciation if you're a good writer. Well that's all I can think of, but be creative. Think of things you would like if you were pregnant or maybe things that you need if you are a teacher. Even the smallest things can show a great deal of appreciation.

Any baby shower ideas?

Nicole C

Any would be great. Thanx =]

Answer
I did an Asian theme per my daughter's request. I purchase decorative Chinese Take out containers from the craft store to put the guests gifts in, we had smaller take out containers (about 2x3 inch) for the favors of which we put chocolates in, we also had silk flowers with cherry blossoms. We did lots of color in red, blue, deep yellow, orange and green. I also purchased paper chinese lanterns in different colors (for a dollar a piece at the dollar store) and then glued baby animal figures on them. Of course we had lots of candles in multi-colored tea light holders.

For food, we did Cold Asian Chicken Salad, Pot Stickers, and Egg rolls and cold broccoli salad. We also had Cheese Cake bites for desert in stead of Cake (my daughter isn't much of a cake person)
We also purchased at the grocery store Fortune Cookies (really inexpensive).
For games we played "Guess the Baby Animal and Baby Bingo" of which we found for free online! Woohoo!

We also did "guess the belly size".

It was very nice and we had all the food on a buffet table fully prepared before anyone got there so we could enjoy our guests. You can also prepare hot tea chinese style.

You can use bamboo as a decoration too- placemats at the dollar store were 4 for a dollar.

Additional Info: I almost forgot! I bought a photo album for 5x7 photos and cut all of the plastic protectors off each page (easy- one snip and they slide off) and then I decorated each page. I create a Guest Book and had each guest write a thought on their page and sign it. I took pictures during the shower and then put them in the remaining pages of her album. Great Keepsake!

Have fun!

Alli

My best friend Lizz's daughter, Bailey's, first birthday is coming up and I wanted to get her something that was very meaningful and not just a cute outfit. Anybody have any good not-too-expensive ideas?

Answer
You could get her a personalized silver baby spoon (personalizationmall.com) or also a baby name plate or a Mr & Mrs Food Face plate, these are great gifts for a 1 year old and something special.

See details on the Food Face plate here: http://www.best-baby-gifts.com/1st-birthday-gift-ideas.html and for a baby name plate here: http://www.best-baby-gifts.com/unique-personalized-baby-gifts.html

what's a good gift for Baby's 1st birthday?

creyesange

He's my baby brother, and younger than me by 20 years.
his birthday is mid-november and with Christmas so close after i don't want to spend a fortune.

Answer
At one the gift will be more to make the parents happy than the baby.

All parents want their baby to be warm and healthy. Why not give the baby a pajama warmer. The parents can dress their baby in warm pajamas every night and they will feel good about it. Sort of a two for one present:
