Gifts for parents of the bride and groom?

Q. I am getting married in a few months and and my fiance at a lost as to what to give our parents. We want to stay away from anything cheesy - like photo frames, or poems - we want something nice, but sentimental. Willing to pay up to $300 for them.

Answer
A really nice gift would be to take one wedding invitation, have them put in a shadow box with a picture of (you pictured with your mom and dad at the wedding) ~ placed on velvet or satin in a color that would compliment your wedding colors~and then have a dried flower from your wedding bouquet or the church flowers placed in the shadow box with the invitation and pictures. It is original and really makes a nice keepsake. It's not about the price of the gift~it's from the heart and would remind them of your special day and that they were a big part of it. Remember, often dad's feel as though they are losing a daughter and moms...well, they are already feeling the empty nest thing. So a gift that shows "they are still very much included" in your life would be appreciated.

Tax advice on a gift I'll be getting?

joni38

My cousin died and left around $300,000 to my mom in her will. My mom has the check and wants to split it between me and my sister - but we want to hold out the amount for gift tax. From googling, it looks like the tax rate is 34%..but my mom talked to her tax man today who said there is no inheritance tax and will be no gift tax on this? Which sounds too good to be true...I asked my mom why there will be no gift tax and she doesn't know...and I can't find out anything else until tomorrow...does anyone know if there is some exception to paying gift tax? I'd always heard it was either $10,000 per person per year or maybe $20,000....she is 88 and wants to give it to us all at once due to her age...we have two other siblings and me and sis are the ones in need of $$, thus her decision to give it to the two of us rather than let it pass thru her will in the future. Also - if no gift tax, then will there be income tax on it? Thanks !!
â¥â¥â¥ thanks to HR Girl & Bostonian!!! I am so happy to hear this tonight :))))
Whooo - HOOOOOO :)))

Answer
First off, the recipient of a gift NEVER pays any tax on the gift. So you and your sister have nothing to worry about.

Due to the size of the gifts, your mother will have to file a Gift Tax return, however no tax will likely be due unless she has been VERY generous throughout her lifetime.

A Gift Tax return is required whenever someone gives gifts totaling $12,000 or more in any one tax year to a single recipient. Since she'll be giving $150,000 to each of you, she will have to file a Gift Tax return. However, on top of the $12,000 per recipient annual exclusion there is a unified lifetime exclusion of $1,000,000. Unless the $276,000 that she's giving the 2 of you brings her over the $1,000,000 lifetime exclusion, no tax will be due at all.

There is one possible hitch, though. That $1,000,000 exclusion is tied to the Estate Tax exclusion and reduces it dollar for dollar. If her estate is substantial it could trigger or increase any Estate Tax that her estate will pay when she passes on herself. For this reason she may wish to consult with a local tax expert -- a CPA or EA, not a storefront tax prep mill -- or an estate planner to make sure that this doesn't trigger any more tax then absolutely necessary. If her total estate, including the $300,000 she inherited, is less than $1,000,000 and isn't likely to exceed that much there won't be any Estate Tax issues to worry about, though.

Baby shower Help?

Liz

okay so im 17 and im throwing a baby shower for my 25 year old sister in law i want it to be lots of fun because her friends are 25 too what kinds of thing should i plan to keep the party interesting Im throwing it in a hurry she could give birth anytime now but her C- section is in febuary the beginningPS: shes having a girl

Answer
If it is going to be all girls....here are some ideas for activities that are sentimental and sweet for the shower!!

Letters to The Baby
As the guests walk to the table where the gifts are being placed.....have a special station set up on the side of the gift table. At this station have cute baby themed stationary laid out with some nice pens. Beside the stationary have a card out asking each guest to take a few moments to write a note to the new little baby. When the guests finish writing their notes, have them place their notes in a tray or basket to the side. Once all the guests have written the notes....the hostess can then do a "raffle" and draw, at random, one or two of the notes and announce the winner of the prize for this particular "game". When the shower is over these notes can be placed in a scrapbook or album to be enjoyed by the parents now and by the baby years down the road. Sweet and sentimental and sure to be treasured by the new family!!!

The "Village" Shares THEIR Excitement
Most of the people attending the baby shower will be close friends and family. At some point during the shower ask each guest to express what they are most excited about upon seeing the baby for the first time. Some may look forward to seeing if the baby has mommy's beautiful eyes. Another may want to see if the baby shares dad's enchanting smile. Still another may be curious as to whether the baby will have Uncle Arthur's double jointed thumb or Aunt Catherine's fabulous sense of humor!! It takes a village to raise and to love a child. The mom and dad will be touched by the love that all these guests have and will have for their new little baby. The guests will be anxious to share their excitement with mom and dad.

A Fun Scavenger Hunt for Unusual but USEFUL items for baby and parents
After the gifts have been opened....surprise the parents with a scavenger hunt for these fun and unique items!! Before the shower you will want to hide these items in rooms that won't be accessed during the party. Have the clues written on parchment paper rolled up and secured with ribbon. The first clue will be handed to the parents (or mommy) the remaining clues will be hidden with each item as it is found.
Item #1: Clue "In the crib you thought baby would sleep.....but there will be many nights you'll be up with baby watching TV. In your comforting arms she (he) will want to be cuddled. Underneath this gift you can both be huddled. There is something for baby and something for mom. Something for daddy....and something for all." (now the hostess will add a clue revealing where the gift is hidden ie: hidden in a room at the top of the stairs, take a sharp left, open the door, it is there!!). Hidden in this room could be a Moses Basket with A Soft Throw blanket and A DVD of a television series mom or dad really likes and a CD to dance with baby to that mom or dad likes!!)

Item #2: Clue: "There are so many items that the book did not heed.....so many items you will not know you need!! At 2 in the morning baby's teeth seem to come....or those irksome gas bubbles that just aren't any fun! A delictable dessert.....not edible at all....has been prepared for your baby....has been prepared for you all. It is full of those items you will definately use....and some extras of items you won't want to lose." (now the hostess will add a clue revealing where the item is hidden...ie: go to the kitchenn and open the door that leads to the place where our food is stored." Hidden in this place will be a diaper cake loaded with all those little items mom and dad will need....but not neccesarily think of until baby is fussy at 2 am (gas drops, infant tylenol, teething gel, soothing bedtime lotion, extra pacifiers, extra batteries for the mobile and other baby items, tooth and gum cleaner, all those little neccesities that you can think of that will be used by mom and dad!!)

Item #3: Clue "This final gift is one for the future....he (she) may write books or learn to tie sutures. A beginning of something that could grow into more, a gift of possibilites of opening doors" (hostess adds a clue as to the location of this gift.....ie: "on the livingroom mantel there has been hidden an item that is attached to the visable ribbon" (the hostess could have ribbon that appears to just be shower decoration ribbon.....but is, in truth, ribbon cascading down the mantel (blue or pink?) that is actually attached to an envelope that is hidden behind something on the mantel like a picture frame.) What will be found is a savings bond that can be put towards baby's education or future, in general, that will be eligible for baby to "cash in" upon it's 18th birthday (or the like).

Make prizes GIFT BASKETS!!! Be creative. Home movie night with blockbuster gift cards and popcorn. Spa basket with bath salts, salt scrub, a loofah and scented candles!

Other prizes: candles, picture frames, scrapbooking kits

FOOD:
Simple. Cheese and crackers. Veggies and dip. Finger sandwiches. Cake. Punch and bottled water.

Decorations:
Balloons, Flowers, A Diaper Cake??, Pictures of your brother (the dad??) and your sister in law when THEY were babies!!

Have fun.....make it memorable!!

What gift is appropriate from a guest for a Catholic baby baptism?

Krissi23

My very good friend has invited me to her daughter's baptism (and luncheon) this weekend. I'm not Catholic, so I don't know much about the ceremony or etiquette. I actually just found out that gifts are given at these events. What types of gifts are/aren't appropriate from a non-family member? For instance, if I have something small engraved, would that be out of order, or a gift that only godparents give? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
A lovely silver spoon engraved with the date and baby's name or family name is a very nice gift--or you could go to a Catholic bookstore and find a Bible or a child's book of prayers and Bible stories so the parents can read them to the little girl later.

Almost anything is "appropriate"--something that commemorates the day and the event. A rosary or pretty decorative crucifix might be nice. This is the time to get a gift that is particularly "Christian" in nature--not like a birthday or for Christmas where you would buy toys or clothing. And it should be specifically "Catholic" as well, although if you're not Catholic, you might have some difficulty figuring out what the differences are. That's why if you shop at a Catholic store, you'll find many ideas. Check in google for "catholic stores online" for baptismal gifts.

What is a good gift to give for a baby's Catholic baptism?

Irish Darl

What is a good gift to give for a baby's Catholic baptism? Recently when I went to my boyfriend's Godson's baptism, the presents consisted of four rosaries, two crosses (plus a crucifix), a few bible and saint books, and at least three stuffed animals that pray. What can I get my best friend's baby for his Baptism this weekend that is not the same old cliche Baptism gift??? PLEASE HELP.

Answer
There is a store called "Things Remember" that engraves. If there is one close to you, they have great gifts, like blankets and all sorts of things. Find something you like and have it engraved with his name and the date of his Baptism.

cute ideas for 1st valentine gift from baby to mother?

yes m

This coming valentine's day is our first valentine with our baby girl - she is 9 months old. Every 1st special holiday, I try to do something cute from our baby to my wife. (my wife loves that stuff).

I am having trouble thinking of something that is cute and clever (and not overly priced) that I can do that is "1st valentine from baby to mother"

If anyone has any nice ideas, please let me know!!

Answer
Drug stores usually have cute little gift sets this time of year, like a small teddy bear holding either a tiny box of chocolate or those hearts with messages on them. They don't cost much and a small bear would remind her of her little baby. I bet you could find a cute card To Mom as well. Also check Hallmark and see if they have anything with 'world's best Mom.' I'm sure she'll love it.

Good luck and enjoy!

What are good gifts for a new mother...not the baby ..the mother.?

E

My sister is having a baby in November and I am planning her Christmas present now. I want to make HER a basket filled with things to celebrate her. I want to fill it with things she may not have been able to enjoy during her pregnancy. Such as A gift card for Coffee, Wine, a Spa day with a Hot Tub (she loves hot tubs and could not go in one on our last cruise) things like that! Any suggestions on a great gift for mommy? OF COURSE I am also going to spoil my new nephew as well!

Answer
Maybe you could make up a gift certificate for you to babysit so she and her husband can go out one night when the baby is a bit older.
(most likley she won't want to do this before 3 or 4 months).

Help me pick gifts for baby shower games......?

PM

I am having a baby shower for my niece and I want the gifts to match the games played. For example:
Game- Name that baby food!
Prize- Recipe in a Jar gift

Game- Pass the dirty diaper
Prize- Nice hand soap and chocolate candy

Game- Unscramble these words
Prize- Lap blanket and Activity Book

Ok, so now that you know where I am going with this, here are the games I need help choosing a prize for:

How many baby items can you name?
Prize-________________

Finish this baby rhyme.....
Prize-________________

Guess Mom-to-be's tummy size (using yarn)
Prize-________________

Don't say "baby"
Prize-________________

I want to keep the cost of each prize to around $5 if possible but I am willing to go up to $10. I am also very crafty so if you have an idea that I can make myself I am listening!

Thanks in advance for anyone who can offer some ideas =0)
I want to keep the cost under $10 each and as far as keeping track of people saying "baby", that wont be my job. The mom to be starts off with a pacifier and if someone hears her say "baby" then they get the pacifier, and so on. So the person with the pacifier at the end of 1 hour wins a prize.
The "Guess the tummy size" game, everyone cuts a piece of yarn the size they guess mom's tummy to be. The person with the closest size wins.
Come on people, I know there are some people out there with some good ideas. Have you been to a baby shower? What were some of the prizes given?

Answer
Baby Items - $15 gift card to like starbucks people would love that

Finish this baby ryhme - maybe a puppy haha just kidding even though it would be nice.

Guess mommys tummy size and Dont say baby shouldnt be a prize at the end because i mean theres gonna be alot of people there...how are you gonna keep track of all the people not saying baby. JW

Answer
Glory Baby
Performed by Watermark
Watermark is a husband and wife team who lost a baby to miscarriage. This song was written just for this baby. They have since had a healthy baby boy.

Should you decide you want this song for your very own, it is available on their CD All Things New.

[Click for information about the CD All Things New, which includes the song "Glory Baby"]

Lyrics:

Glory Baby

Glory baby, you slipped away as fast as we could say baby, baby
You were growing, what happened, dear, you disappeared on us baby, baby

Heaven will hold you before we do
Heaven will keep you safe until we're home with you
Until we're home with you

Chorus

Miss you every day
Miss you in every way
But we know there's a day when we will hold you
We will hold you

And you'll kiss our tears away
When we're home to stay
Can't wait for the day
When we will see you, we will see you

But baby let sweet Jesus hold you
'Till Mom and Dad can hold you
You'll just have heaven before we do
You'll just have heaven before we do
Before we do

Sweet little babies
It's hard to understand it 'cause we're hurting
We are hurting
But there is healing
And we know we're stronger people through the growing
And in knowing
That all things will work together for our good
And God works His purposes, just like He said He would
Just like He said He would

Chorus

I can't imagine heaven's lullabies and what they must sound like
But I'll rest in knowing that heaven is your home
And it's all you'll ever know
All you'll ever know

Chorus

--------------------------------
Fly - Celine Dion

Fly, fly little wing
Fly beyond imagining
The softest cloud, the whitest dove
Upon the wing of Heaven's love
Past the planets and the stars
Leave this lonely world of ours
Escape the sorrow and the pain
And fly again

Fly, fly precious one
Your endless journey has begun
Take your gentle happiness
Far too beautiful for this
Cross over to the other shore
There is peace forevermore
But hold this memory bittersweet
Until we meet

Fly, fly do not fear
Don't waste a breath, don't shed a tear
Your heart is pure, your soul is free
Be on your way, don't wait for me
Above the universe you'll climb
On beyond the hands of time
The moon will rise, the sun will set
But I won't forget

Fly, fly little wing
Fly where only angels sing
Fly away, the time is right
Go now, find the light
----------------------------------
Jesus Has a Rocking Chair - The Greenes
Many hopeful moms and dads
Try to have a child of their own
Some will never get the chance
Others do and see them grown
And there are those who are expecting
That precious baby soon
But then it's gone before it ever leaves
The safety of it's mamma's womb

Jesus has a rocking chair
And He holds that precious baby
With oh, such tender care
He takes the place of mom and dad
He's the greatest parent a child could have
Don't worry about the children there
Jesus has a rocking chair

There are those who have a boy or girl
A lovely gift of God
But then sickness or a tragedy
Takes them from their parent's arms
Mammas wish for days gone by
Daddies long for that lost child
But the children are not lost
When you know where they are

She was eighteen and unmarried
Expecting her little one
But in her time of confusion
She took the life of her son
Since then Jesus forgave her
And took all her shame away
Still she cries missing her baby
But she hears the angels say

Jesus has a rocking chair
And He holds that precious baby
With oh, such tender care
He takes the place of mom and dad
He's the greatest parent a child could have
Don't worry about the children there
Jesus has a rocking chair

Then theres Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. . not really about miscarriage, but loosing a child nonetheless..

Answer
Sorry baby

Who Should get the baby?

Spread Pea

In a case in Florida a couple hired a woman to be their surrogate. Now she is refusing to give the baby to the couple. The surrogate is also the biological mother, they used her egg, fertilized it with the husbandâs sperm. However the surrogate mother never signed the contract, the couple never checked because they trusted the woman whom they found online via a surrogacy website. The woman cashed the check the couple gave her to carry baby /donate egg. The womanâs lawyer said under Florida law surrogacy is much like adoption, the mother (surrogate) has the option to keep the baby.

The couple has a young son also via surrogate different woman though.
So who should get the baby? Morally this woman should give the baby to this couple they trusted her to carry and give them their child, and she agreed to do that, as well as using her own egg. Maybe the woman never intended to scam them and just bonded with the baby as anyone carrying a baby is likely to do and even more that the baby is biological hers. However she didnât sign the paperwork so that makes you question it. But why? The price they paid really wasnât that much 1,500 dollars. It seems what could happen is that there would have to be joint custody because again the father is the biological father that was proved with a DNA test already. I just feel bad for this couple they didnât go into this with plans to have to share their child. Or possible never see her.

Answer
Morally, the couple should get the baby. But the laws don't work by morals. So this case will become an issue of who gets custody of the baby and who gets every other weekend.
Since one part of the couple is the biological parent, the couple could sue for custody. Would they have to prove the surrogate is unfit? Chances are yes.
I think what will happen is the surrogate will get physical custody and get child support. The couple will get every other weekend. The baby that was so badly wanted by a couple will become a piece of property that both sides will fight over.
If the couple decide to walk away, the husband is still responsible for child support if the surrogate asks for it. As for the check, since the contract wasn't signed it was a gift.
I think this is a very sad case and I wish laws were based on morals. The baby and the couple who wanted the baby now have to suffer. A women who offered to help a couple have a baby stole money, the baby and will now be rewarded for it by getting child support.
But the moral of this story is to make sure all you T's are crossed and I's dotted. Get the contract signed before you proceed with a deal. Then if something happens, you have legal paperwork to help prove your case.
Since this wasn't done, this case now becomes your typical family court dispute.

Types of Christmas Gift Exchange?

trekboy

I'm looking for different Types of Christmas Gift Exchanges. I know of White Elephant, and Secret Santa. I was wondering if anyone knew of any others that would be similar.

Answer
I have never heard of the White Elephant, but it may be the same as what my extended family does at Christmas. Each person brings a wrapped gift around $20.00, marks them as a man, woman, or either gift. We each draw a number, number 1 picks a gift from under the tree, each person can either take a gift from under the tree or take another persons gift. It gets to be very funny, but make sure that there isnt a cry baby in the group or they will ruin it for everyone.
My 82 year old Dad doesn't shop, so for Christmas he cracks open walnuts very carefully removes the meat of the nut and replaces it with money. Then he glues them back together and hangs them on a tree branch. Each of us takes turns picking a nut from the tree cracking it open to find our surprise inside. It can be anywhere from a nickle to $100.00 bill. He devised this plan saying that he doesn't have to worry with shopping, and no one could ever say that he favors one child/grandchild/great grandchild over another.

My nephew is turning 1 this month, whats a good gift to get him!?

Q. I don't want to spend over 50$ but I also want him to enjoy it for many years to come! I was looking at babies-r-us but i'm not sure what he would like since i've never had any nephews or nieces help!

Answer
You can get lots of things for under $50 even under $20. Try K-mart.
How about a toy mobile phone?
Can he walk? A push along walker, perhaps.
Anything he can make noises with or that produce noises are always popular!!

What would be a safe Christmas gift for a 6 month boy? It has been 20 years since purchase baby gifts, gave?

gift cards to the parents and don't want to do that now.

Answer
I am dying for a teething necklace so my baby can have something to chew on while I am holding her that will not fall on the floor every time she lets go of it. I know it sounds like a mom gift, but it would benefit both and would be a sweet bonding gift. I am attaching two links: one is for one that is about $20 and the other is $150 and up. If your situation/relationship is one that makes the more expensive one appropriate, you could look at it as a sweet heirloom that could be given to baby for his own baby one day.

Xmas tree gift for sgl mom and babys first?

Jeremy

Need a tree decor idea or even a present can be from myself or even from the baby to mommy.

Fionce left her after getting pregnant and the baby single-handedly saved her life(literally) and for that i call the baby, her angel.

Its the babys first xmas and mommys first as a mother who is doing a remarkable job considering her obstacles.

I need some sort of gift ideas for either the tree or a gift i can hide and act like its from the baby to mommy...the more tears and happier i can get her the better.

Please help ! Lol

Btw, baby girl is 9mo

Answer
Concerning a tree ornament, Hallmark have every year a special 'baby's first Christmas' ornament where you can insert baby's photo. You can even make an ornament yourself by decorating a small picture frame.
Or take a Christmas bauble and print baby's hand- or footprint on it and write 'baby's 1st Xmas 2012' on it, too.
There are also Christmas baubles where you can insert baby's photo or DIY snow globes.
Then you could make a magic cup with baby's photo (wearing an Xmas hat or a bib saying 'baby's 1st Xmas) for the mommy. The magic about the cup is that the photo only appears when you pour a hot beverage in it!
Or paint a white tee for her / have it printed saying 'Greatest mom in the world' - and again you can make hand- and / or footprints of baby on it, too.
You can find all these ideas and even more and also some instructions at the website giving great tips for 'gifts from baby':
http://www.best-baby-gifts.com/gifts-from-baby.html

Also check out their ideas for new mommy gifts, maybe you can get some ideas there, too.

Hope my tips helped and wish you a Merry Xmas - it's great that you care about that lady and her little one!

Hi, I had an under $100 budget for my mom as well. I bought my mom this lotion from COACH, $48, and in our mall we have Whitehall Jewelers, which is closing. It closes across the country tomorrow at 6p.m. I got my mom this 14kt gold band (ring) that she wanted for only $34 plus tax because they are offering 80% off.
If you don't have a Whitehall Jewelers I would recommend looking into Kay Jewelers for the open heart collection by Jane Seymour. They make nice pieces. You can get a sterling silver pendant or sterling silver ring for $49 if they are still available; however, if they don't have anymore jewelery left you can get a charm if they have any for $40, and go to a kiosk in the mall and buy a nice chain to put it on, or you can just present ur mom with the charm if she has a bracelet she could add it onto.

Good Luck! Sorry, I just saw this question and its a little late to answer.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

What sort of gift do you bring for a three month baby?

Prizzy

Answer
clothes...babies grow fast and as a 2nd time mom I love when I get gifts of clothes for my new little one.something in size 3-6 months for them to wear now and then buy some larger sized outfits for the fall/winter time. You can buy them a little play gym thing if they don't have one already. I bought one for my daughter for tummy time and for her to play with when shes a little older. :)

Answer
I had a 9 month old son when I found out I was 2 months pregnant I freaked!! I asked my grandmother for help and she said don't forget about the older one. She went through something like you are. See my uncle was born in Jan. of 1960 and my mother was born in Dec. of 1960. yep two babies in the same year. She told me to just remember that you have two babies and both are gifts and that no matter what you have to give your attention to the one that is outside of the womb right now. This way you will have a bond with both babies. So that is what I have done and both of my sons are best friends, I do have times where the older one is jeoluse but it works out in the end. So don't worry you will work it out, that is all you can do. Good luck!

Advice from Jewish folks?

djc1175

I'm Christian, and my Dr's wife is expecting their first child(male) next month. They are Jewish. I would like to get them a gift but have no idea what to get. When I was with him the other day I mentioned a 'Hamsa" his answer was "Oh, my wife has ton's on those." Any good idea's for me??
My question is here, because this is about Culture and Society!

Answer
As I'm sure you already know, Jews don't believe in Baby showers for the most part. They see it as bad luck.

So, wait until after the baby has been named.
(Usually another separate ceremony)

Personalized gifts are always welcomed after the Naming ceremony!
A personalized Kiddish cup or Mezuzah is always welcomed as these items become part of the child's Heritage collection.

What would be a proper present to bring to a Bris?

Tahini Cla

A friend's baby is having his Bris this Thursday, and I wonder what to bring along. Scotch, nappies, earplugs, anything, you name it, but I'd like it to be proper procedure.
And the question just occurred to me whether the present is more for the child or more for the parents?

Answer
If you have already given the baby a gift, do not feel obligated to bring one to the bris. However, a small token gift, such as a bib or stuffed animal, is perfectly appropriate.

Though it is thoughtful to give a baby gift with religious meaning, it is certainly not required, nor even expected, if you are not Jewish. Any gift suitable for a newborn baby boy is appropriate.

Do not be offended when your gift is not opened in front of you. The bris ceremony does not involve gift opening, and most parents choose to open the gifts after their guests have gone home.
