We are catholic so last year a little after our daughter was born we had her baptized at our church followed by a big back yard BBQ where all the guests brought her gifts and enjoyed the party. My friend who is not catholic just invited to me to a baby dedication for her son at their church followed by a luncheon at her home. I did not want to be rude and ask her, but what exactly is a baby dedication? Also is it customary to bring gifts?

A baby dedication is something that some protestant churches do because they don't believe in baptizing babies. It's basically the same thing as a baptism without the sacrament. The parents bring the child forward to the pastor, who does a blessing and prays over the family, and the parents usually take a vow to raise the child to know and love Jesus.
Small gifts are nice, but you're not obliged. Unless you feel that you are because your friend got you something when your daughter was baptized. Gifts are generally in the "child of God" vein, like this onesie:

What to do for baby dedication?

What do you typically do for a baby dedication. Do you have a party after? Are people expected to bring gifts? Do you do formal invitations? Is it only a few people that come to the party after? Does it have to be at a restaurant? ANy other ideas?

We have done many dedications for my nieces & nephews. My daughter will also be dedicated at the end of this month. We have asked our Pastor to do her baby dedication. We will have it at a Rose Garden. He will say a few prayers and then dedicate her to God. We will have a small celebration at a restaurant with a few chosen people. We thought about a BBQ to follow but we couldn't reserve a park. We do not expect gifts. I also made our invitations on my computer through Publisher.
