What would be a great 1st birthday gift to a baby girl from Grandparents?

Olivia

My in-laws are asking me what gifts they should buy for my baby girl's 1st birthday. Any suggestions?

Answer
Is there anything you NEED for the baby that you can't afford to get? Or something that you plan to get in the near future for her? If you are okay finacially, then open a savings account for her. Let them know that maybe an outfit and a small deposit into the savings account would be perfect.

What are good gift ideas for a one year old?

Starter

My nephew's first birthday is coming up. I have no kids so I have no idea what kids want. I am also unfortunately not very close to my sister so I can't simply ask what would be a good gift and I also have no idea what toys, etc. they already have. So I'm deferring to Yahoo Answers. What is a good gift idea for a baby's first birthday? One that preferably most parents wouldn't already have? Thanks in advance.

Answer
Clothes, Clothes gift cards, toys, toys r us gift card, books that are age appropriate for the parents to read to the baby, diapers, wipes. those are all useful things i'd appreciate. also maybe shoes or sandals. Ask for sizes of course

What are some good gifts for a mom with a baby in NICU?

My cousin's wife just had an emergency c-section about 2.5 months early and her baby will be in the NICU for a few months, I would like to make a basket of things for MOM to keep her occupied, take her mind off things, relax, food stuff...I am looking to spend around $50. Thanks :)
You guys are coming up with some wonderful ideas, I'll never be able to pick the best answer :)
And yes, I stress again that this basket is for MOM not baby :)

Answer
My daughter was born 6 weeks early and stayed in the NICU for a month. As a NICU mom I can tell you, it's not easy! What a wonderful idea, I wish someone would have done that for me! Things I think are a good idea to include in the basket are: slippers, purell hand sanitizer (always washing your hands in NICU!) a journal for mommy to write about what's happening for the baby later, a note pad to jot down names and numbers of health prof. and new friends made in the NICU, hand lotion (from washing your hands so much!), a disposable camera, snacks, information about preemie's and baby wearing (as the hospital may not tell you), a warm throw blanket for mom to snooze with in the rocking chair, and maybe even a gift certificate for mom and dad to go out to dinner....you need to take a break from the NICU sometimes!

Awww....I really hope she enjoy's the gift basket and knowing she's got a good friend thinking of her!

Nephew arrived 6 weeks early. What should I buy now and what should I save for the shower?

Me

My nephew arrived six weeks early and about two weeks before my sister in law's planned baby shower. I want to send some stuff right now but I'm not sure what would be best. Clothes? Bottles? Diapers? What should I send now and what should I save for the shower?

Answer
Newborn or if he's really small, preemie onesies (the little shirt with the snaps at the crotch) are always useful. Burping cloths, diapers and socks are also always needed. I would suggest getting the useful gifts now and something more novel/exciting for the shower.

What are appropriate Indian wedding gifts?

TK421

My wife's best friend who was her maid of honor is getting married in India. My wife would have been her friend's maid of honor, but we just had our first baby born last week - the wedding is the last week of December. What is an appropriate gift and traditional Indian gift that my wife could give to her close friend, besides money?

Answer
Gold jewelry, but that is usually given by the bride's parents. Some people give really nice sarees to the bride. Pretty much anything you would give to an American couple is good to give to an Indian couple; just make sure the voltage is compatible if you are giving an appliance.

What are some unique and out of the box ideas for a baby shower?

m!$$ und3r

I really want to have something original and not so traditional for my upcoming baby shower. For example, instead of a cake i was thinking about having a candy buffet. What other ideas can you think of? By the way its going to be co-ed also.

Answer
i want to have a table set up at my baby shower where people go decorate a baby onesie for the new baby! i've already had one baby/baby shower so i want this one to be a little less about gifts/me and more about celebrating the new baby and having special pictures/memories/homemade items for the new baby!
i think for a co-ed i was going to have a barbecue for the guys to be outside barbecuing while the girls do the "girly" stuff and then maybe some games that everyone can enjoy! i knew a girl that had her fave ultrasound picture blown up really big and had everyone sign it and write a little message for the new baby and then they framed it for her. and then of course there are the belly casts--but that may be better for just the girls. :)
i always thought it would be cool to have a themed shower that was more like a party and have mocktails and pregnancy safe sushi...things you would have at a party but tweaked for the baby/pregnancy.

What to say in a baby shower video message?

Tayls

Friends of mine had a baby shower a while ago that mostly family attended. I was invited, but I had the flu so I gave them a gift, but did not attend. Now they're having another shower for friends, but I will be out of town that weekend so the host asked me to send in a video message. I don't know them very well so I don't have anything too personal to say. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer
wow! what a great idea! Give your reaction to the news, maybe share a funny story about the mom or parents, say something like 'We're all excited and can't wait to meet you!' And just say You wish you could be there, so you wanted to send some love and congratulate the new parents.

What baby items did you find most useful?

gifts for baby 6-9 months image

silly nill

I am in the middle of trying to register for baby items because EVERYBODY i know is asking about registry items and baby showers for me, SO my question is what were the most useful items you received that you definitely use and are glad you got?
I know people always get some crazy stuff that is totally useless and just gets thrown away or re-gifted. And then there are also the items that you get and don't expect to use but it turns out to be the most useful and amazing thing.
WHAT were your amazing things?
What were your useless items?

thanks!

Answer
most useful:
swing
swaddlers (the kind that have the velcro and you just wrap around and velcro it, much easier than a blanket and it doesn't come apart like a blanket)
sleepsacks
bouncer
diapers
clothes (but so many people bought us clothes for later, like 6 - 9 month clothes that we barely had any for newborn - we will be happy at 6 - 9 months but it is nice to have some clothes for the beginning!)
baby bathtub

don't bother with:
wipe warmer
scale
changing table (if you have a dresser just get changing pad and put it on top of that)
sterilizer (you only have to sterilize bottles/nipples before you use them for the first time, they don't need to be sterilized before every use)

How often do infants need new shoes?

Smile.

I am aware that their feet grow quite fast. I am thinking of getting my friend's baby a pair of boots, but they're kinda expensive so I'd like to know how long she will be able to use them. She's only a week old now, will they last till winter?

Answer
This is a really tricky purchase even if the baby is with you to buy the shoes. And there is no telling how long they will last. At that young of an age babies don't run at all consistent with the 0-3, 3-6, 6-9 month sizes. My son was born with feet a 6 month size. He still has big feet 6 years later.

I honestly never bought shoes until he was walking. I think they are cute sometimes. But what's the point? Better gifts that would be more useful are diapers, onesies, and baby basics. ALL new moms use and love these items.

Edit- If you're really stuck on shoes you could check Younkers and JC Penney. They carry little socks for babies that are printed to look like Mary Janes. I saw a pack at Younkers that had 8 different colored pairs. But I would still ask her sock size first and buy at least a size up.

Here is a link for a website that sells them.

This site has tons more cute socks! :)

If you woke up 9 months pregnant today, what would you do?

PeaceLoveH

If you woke up 9 months pregnant, what would you do? What if you were giving birth tomorrow? What would you say to your parents and family? What would you do with the baby? I know first I would scream a little and then give the child up for adoption because I am NOT ready for a child at all! I just thought this would be an interesting question!

Answer
I would be grateful to have been able to sleep through all the aches and pains and morning sickness and heartburn and crazy moody emotional outbreaks. I am 9 months pregnant right now, so I am just complaining lol :)

Seriously though - I would be ecstatic! I have a 2 year old right now, and am due to give birth in a few short weeks with my second, both boys. I would probably send my boyfriend out to the store to get some newborn stuff like diapers, wipes, clothes, new bottles, that sort of thing, and then also add on the list ice cream because all of pregnant ladies like ice cream lol. I am not close with my parents, but I do live right next door to my sister and she would be almost as excited as me. Then we would tell my boyfriend's parents and they would be really happy to have another grandchild. They are the best grandparents to my little boy so I know they would love another addition!

When you are ready for children, you are gonna have a blast. They truly are one of the best gifts in life :) Take care!

What is a nice way to say you don't need cloths for baby shower gifts?

Alison

My daughter (who will be born in December) has so many cloths! Everything from 0-9 months and 18 months (for next summer). Is there a nice way to say in my shower invitations that we don't need cloths? I don't want to sound ungreatful and I know a gift is a gift but there are still many things she really needs on her registry.
Thanks!

Answer
Stress gift receipts so that you can return the clothes you get for items you need. "Gift receipts in case of double-gifting would be greatly appreciated." Something along those lines.

I have been wanting a dog for a while and my mom keep saying I have to get one from a shelter. So I was wondering do most dogs from there make good pets?

Answer
Of course a dog from a shelter can make a great pet.
It also depends on how you treat and train the dog as well as the type of breed and the individual dogs personality.
Most have some basic obedience training.
For example, my sister's dog was from the Humane Society and already had training done on her when they got her. She is very sweet and listens well. She even knows how to put her toys away.

My mom loves shoes and she is a pharmacist. She is very picky about the shoes she wears and the kind she likes..no stilettos or high heels please!

My step dad loves the Ohio State Buckeyes. He also likes Nascar; especially Jeff Gordon. I don't want to get him anything OSU because I have gotten him things OSU for the past 2 years. He also has a birthday in November so I need to get him a couple gifts.

Or you could make her a gift basket much like this one http://www.esd-inc.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Gift-Baskets-Image3.jpg
and it could include...

Does anyone know how to create an elaborate baby shower without spending a lot of money?

gifts for baby naming day on Buy Individual Embroidery Designs from the set Fathers Day Gifts
gifts for baby naming day image

hklcrazy4h

I'm throwing a baby shower for my sister in April, and I want it to be calm and relaxing and beautiful. (Think Brittany Spears' baby shower. A middle -eastern theme with elaborate colors and pillows and fabrics) Does anyone know how I could do this on a budget? What stores to go to etc.

Answer
One thing that you do not want to forget when planning a baby shower is the party favor. This does not have to be some huge extravagant gift but just a small token to thankt he guests for coming to the party. baby shower party favors can be a range of gifts and can often be bought or made with little expense. This article will give you some ideas of top baby shower gifts and hopefully spark your own creativity and give you some ideas and places to start from.

First and foremost make sure you start planning ahead of time. It is pretty hard to be creative when you are under pressure and no one likes assembling party favors the night before the shower. So take some time and think about the favors before it is too late.

One of the best starting places for planning your baby shower party favors is the theme of the shower. It is always best if you can tie the favor into the theme for the baby shower. This makes the favors more memorable and fun.

Chocolates and Cookies

They say the true way to a person's heart is through food of course this is a paraphrase of a popular saying but one that often holds true. Chocolates and cookies make great favors for guests as it is something they can enjoy right away. Just imagine your guests having a cookie of chocolate as they remember the wonderful shower they attended.

Chocolates and cookies also make great baby shower favors because they can easily be made at home or even purchased in bulk from a variety of sources and then assembled together in a cute package. So if you have the time then try making them yourself and save some money or if you are pressed for time then simply buy the chocolates or cookies and wrap them up in a beautiful package.

Soaps

Soaps are another very popular option for favors and something that guests will love and enjoy using. You can easily choose a variety of fragrant soaps and bath products and assemble them together in some colorful wrapping paper or even a gift box or basket for a fun favor.

Handmade soaps are another way to save money and make the favor gift a little more personalized and unique. Most local craft stores carry a wide selection of supplies for making your own handmade soaps and even oils and fragrances to dress them up a bit. Many of the homemade soaps today are very easily made with a melt and pour method.

Picture Frames

Picture frames are another fun and yet useful party favor that your guests will get a kick out of. Picture frames are some of the most popular and common party favors for baby showers. You can purchase small frames for a very modest cost and decorate them if you have the time. If the baby has already been born then why not include some fun pictures of the baby in the frame.

Candles

Candles can be another popular option that is again something you can be sure your guests will use and enjoy for a long time to come. You can purchase candles in bulk for a good price and then wrap them in some decorative wrapping paper. Also you might want to think about a candle holder or glass for small votive candles that can easily be decorated.

If you are more the artistic or crafty type of person and want to make your own candles this can be a fun way to personalize the favor. You can make a wide variety of different shapes, colors and sizes of candles and then wrap a few up together for a fun baby shower favor that will be sure to please your guests.

The most important thing is to plan ahead and leave yourself some time to assemble or make the party favors so you will not be rushed at the last minute. It is always a nice touch to include a thank you card or even a small poignant poem and be sure to include the date of the shower and the baby's name as well as the names of the parents. This will create a fun and lasting memory of the special day.

How can I make my daughter accept her new baby sister?

el68niou1

I am having a baby in about 2 weeks and my 18 month old daughter is very jealous. She doesn't like for me to pay attention to any other children besides her. She doesn't even like for my 5 year old to hug me. She is jealous to the point that she will fight another child over me. Once she tried to drag a newborn out of my lap by his foot. Thank goodness I had a good grip on him. What can I do to make her accept this new child in the family without her feeling angry or left out? I also need to make sure I can ensure the baby's safety.

Answer
I agree with the above answers but I would like to tell you what I did. My oldest daughter is now 7 when my youngest was born she was 5 1/2. My husband and me went and bought a gift for my oldest from the baby. After you have the baby, at the hospital have the gift (something that she will REALLY like) ready and wrapped and give it to your oldest the first day she comes to see you and the baby and tell her it is from the baby <say babies name>. She will love it. Also make sure you let your oldest "help you" with the baby (picking out clothes, holding the bottle and when the baby is older and starting to eat cereal let her help you feed the baby <all with your supervision>show her how to take little spoon fulls and make sure you keep a close eye on her without her really knowing that you are watching. You will need to keep it clear that she is only to "help" when you are around and not on her own. There will be jealousy for a while <mine is still jelous of my now toddler> but it is normal you just need to keep and eye out all the time. If it gets to the point that you think she might harm the baby on purpose take her to a counsellor and they will be able to help you get to the root of the problem and how to solve it. < Just wait until the baby gets jelous of the older child! GOOD LUCK!!

Just my op

I graciously gave a mother in my son's class a baby gift as well as a little something for her elder son (who is in my son's class). She is the room mom, does a great job getting things done.

While I know you souldn't "expect" a thank you, it seems odd to me that the gifts were not acknowledged in any way?!

Just wondering what your thoughts are.......................

Thanks!

Answer
how rude.
a gift is what is not expected or required, but a thank you always is.

How much should a godmother spend on a baby shower gift?

Lindsey H

I was asked to me a godmother for my best friends soon to be born daughter. I am throwing her a baby shower (with the help of her mom) and I was wondering what an average dollar amount was to be spent on the baby shower gift. I wasn't sure what is too much and what is too less.
I can afford anything. I really have no limit or budget. Yes she has a registry.

Answer
Unless your best friend is extraordinarily selfish, she will probably appreciate the fact that you are (presumably) spending money to throw her a baby shower, and would be accepting of any gift you can afford. My suggestion would be not to think so much about the price of the gift, but consider more the thoughtfulness and usefulness of the gift. What do you think she'll really need? Check her registry and get what you think she'll really be able to use, and also be something that lets her think about you every time she uses it. There are plenty of things that fall into those categories that are reasonably priced (layette, sheets, bath items, bottles, etc.). Besides, if you're the godmother, you'll probably get the baby another more religious keepsake type of present when he/she is baptized. But overall, I'd say get her whatever you want to get, and don't worry about what you should spend. It sounds like you're already doing enough.
And congrats, godmom!

gifts for baby boy 6 months image

happyoo3

I have had a personal trainer for 6 months and have already lost 30 lbs. We have a good relationship. He kind of reminds me of an older brother. He is a really good trainer. He is married and has two little boys. When the youngest was born a couple of months ago, I got them a baby gift and he seemed to appreciate it. So his birthday is next week and I didn't know what to get him or if to get anything. Any ideas?

Answer
I don't really think that a birthday gift is appropriate, since you have an employer/employee type of rerlationship. If you choose to get anything, get him a card with a gift certificate for dinner for his family somewhere, or maybe a cash tip in honor of his birthday. A card alone would be quite appropriate and thoughtful.

Any ideas for decorations for a baby shower?

justme

It is for a baby girl. I am not the most creative person so my imagination is limited to balloons and streamers! Any suggestions are appreciated.

Answer
How about a diaper cake? They make gorgeous centerpieces, and a great conversation starter as well. Have a look:
http://www.diapercakewalk.com/catalog.php?category=4

Also consider table cloths for the gift table and the food table. This is a great place to add a nice splash of color, and a paper table cloth is very inexpensive. At our local craft store (try Michaels or Hobby Lobby) they have these opalescent pink or blue table cloths (they're paper) for less than $5. Very pretty.

For the balloons, try using good sized baby care items as balloon weights, like baby powder or baby lotion. Once the balloons are tied on, get an inexpensive roll of pink ribbon that you like, and tie a large bow in the middle of the balloon strings (around all of them.) Super pretty.

You can also get a bag of baby confetti, and a few rolls of "curling" ribbon that match your color scheme. Cut 12" lengths of the curling ribbon, run scissors over it to curl it, and then just sprinkle on tables with the confetti.

Lots of other baby shower ideas here:
http://www.diapercakewalk.com/pages/baby-shower-ideas.php

I'm sure it will be beautiful! Enjoy the baby shower!

What are some ideas for a Baby Shower?

The baby shower is 2morrow and i just wanted 2 make sure she has a great baby shower cuz this is my aunts first child! Thanks 4 ur help. If a shower was thrown for u or u helped throw on then please help.

Answer
Don't ya hate it when nobody answers your question?
Ugh.
I will. don't worry.

I threw my own shower the first time and decorated pink and greeen strawberry shortcake. Had a cake that said "Berry Sweet Baby Girl" and had a ton of balloons and streamers. Table cloth. Pink and green forks/spoons/plates/napkins etc. Snacks. Strawberry punch. That kind of stuff. Did games like tp around the baby, don't say baby game, guessed how many pacifier candies were in a bottle, etc. you can look some up. :) Only had 9 guests and 3 gifts...

For the next one we're having a baby sprinkle bbq celebration and having either ribs or brisket with potato salad, baked beans, etc etc. with 30 or so guests.

It's more about the memory than anything but decorate pretty and take a ton of pics of the mom to be!!!

Did your partner get you a gift when your baby was born?

Hayden-Mom

I have seen on random shows, read in magazines and even heard from other people about their partner getting them a gift once the baby is born.

Like something sentimental because now you are the mother of their baby.

Is this a normal tradition? Has anyone else had this?

My fiance got me roses when we found out we were having a baby, but its not due for another 19 weeks lol, so Im not sure what to expect. Should I get him something too? Or is it more just something the dad does?

I had never thought about it but my husband surprised me with a necklace at my baby shower...which was done in the hospital because my water had broken 9 weeks early and thankfully the hospital allowed me to be wheeled down on a stretcher and given a shower in the conference room.

It was so sweet ---i never expected him to do that :) I gave him a son :)

If you give a wedding shower gift do you still have to give a wedding gift?

I recently went to a wedding for a co-worker. I gave a gift of money. I was surprised that none of my other co-workers brought a gift for the couple. We are all pretty close, so I asked why they hadn't brought a gift. They said that since we threw her a shower, and gave gifts at work, a gift for the wedding was not necessary. I grew up in the north and now live in the south. I was wondering if this is typical in the south. Let me know what you think.

Answer
The south will take advantage of you if they can. Up north for a shower we used to pitch in $2-$5 for a group gift, down here (south) the co-worker who I didn't know (the person the shower was for) was bold enough to write on a piece of paper (not even to my face) dropped off a note of an item she wanted for $30 and told me where I could buy it and leave it. What nerve!!!!! I'm not going to pay for someone I don't even know.

when up north the family helps out at the shower so they aren't expected to give at the shower, instead they give a gift of money at the wedding only. The money is supposed to pay for their groceries and start up costs when they start out. Those who have been working a while use the money instead for their honeymoon so they can come back and then ask for a baby shower gift. lol

Up north we used to give to showers because we knew that when our own kids had a shower or when other members of our family had showers that it would be an exchange of gifts among friends. It was my impression then that you give only to receive in the future. If you have nothing upcoming in the future then you don't have to give unless you really want to or have to to stay in good graces at work so they don't blackball you.

What gifts do you get at a baby shower?

We will be finding out soon what the baby is and I wanted to start buying somethings now because money will be tight when the baby get's here. I was just wondering what gifts to expect at a baby shower if I have one so I know more along the lines of what we should buy? Also what was the best gift that you received at your baby shower?

Answer
First of all, you should register somewhere.
If you register at a couple stores your friends and family can go to those stores, and print out a list of things you need.
Registering is actually alot of fun. You get to take around a little scanner and scan different things throughout the store that you need or would like to have.

Most people usually get clothes, bottles, diapers, car seats, strollers, baby toys, pacifiers, bibs, baby toys, pillows, bedding if you ask for it, money, picture frames, mobiles, ect.

Do you think a stock certificate for a christening gift is a good idea?

My husband and I are the godparents of our best friends' baby boy. Should we go with something more religious? I don't want to buy silver monogrammed rattles, cups or anything b/c I know he will receive tons of that kind of thing.

Answer
My son got 3 stocks ($100 worth) when he was born. Fifteen years later, these stocks are worth $600.00 (between splits and reinvestments of dividends). I think that stocks, bonds and even precious metals are a decent gift for a new born.
