Do dogs from shelters make good pets?

I have been wanting a dog for a while and my mom keep saying I have to get one from a shelter. So I was wondering do most dogs from there make good pets?

Of course a dog from a shelter can make a great pet.
It also depends on how you treat and train the dog as well as the type of breed and the individual dogs personality.
Most have some basic obedience training.
For example, my sister's dog was from the Humane Society and already had training done on her when they got her. She is very sweet and listens well. She even knows how to put her toys away.

My mom loves shoes and she is a pharmacist. She is very picky about the shoes she wears and the kind she likes..no stilettos or high heels please!

My step dad loves the Ohio State Buckeyes. He also likes Nascar; especially Jeff Gordon. I don't want to get him anything OSU because I have gotten him things OSU for the past 2 years. He also has a birthday in November so I need to get him a couple gifts.
