I have gifts from one family member who accidently purchased 20 NEOSURE cans instead of regular ones, and my baby is not premature. Should I add extra water like in formula than regular blue lid Similac? I am worry that my baby will be overweight if I use Neosure for him. Thanks.

Answer
its high calorie formula, use it if you want, or keep it on hand in case your baby doesnt gain weight well, or, even better, donate it to the nicu at your local hospital, other option is try to exchange it for something you will use

What to give someone who lost their baby?

linkinpark

My sister was pregnant at 20 weeks with her 3rd child, and I am also pregnant. There was only a day difference between our babies. I am having a tough time because I would like to see her but don't want it to be tough for her to see me pregnant, as she just lost her baby- because she was bleeding severily and needed to have the emergency sergurery, which then caused her to have to deliver the baby. I feel such pain for her and don't know what I can do and would like to take her something when I go see her but I don't know of a gift that would be good to take to someone in this sort of situation. Could you please help me with ideas of something that I could take her.
Also it has been really tough because the baby was born alive, and lived for 45 minutes, and my sister didn't get to meet her. They didn't save her because she wasn't strong enough.

Answer
I wouldn't give her a gift. Gifts are for celebrations, even though this would be kindly meant. If someone gave me a gift at such a moment, I think that I would be confused and at a loss on what to say.

I think that honest communication is always best. I would call your sister and ask if you can come to see her. I would say just what you told us - that you are hesitating because you are afraid that it will be hard for her, but that you want to show your love. Let her know that it's okay to say "no".

If she's recovering from surgery, I would also offer practical help such as doing shopping for her, run errands, watching other kids, etc.

What to give mother as a gift after baby?

tim'slove

My sister in law in having a c-section today. It was not planned.I would like to get her something that she may need in the hospital or shortly after?I have already given a baby gift but want to bring something just fir her. Any ideas? Thanks in advance :)

Answer
You could put together a little bag or basket for her of some nice little things for her durring her recovery.

She will be told to take it easy for a week or two after the surgery, so you could get her a good book, or some magazines if shes into celeb gossip, some nice smelling lotions, maybe a nice candle, and a couple of her favorite snack things - like a little box of cookies or cupcakes from a bakery etc.

Just some little things that are for HER - to help relax and pass some time :)

Im due tomorrow with a baby boy - our first - and I would love if someone brought me a little package like this to the hospital :)

What kind of paints do I need for terracotta pots?

gifts for baby lily image
Q. My kids want to make some gifts for all the mothers in the family for Mother's Day. We have a whole bunch of baby Aloe Vera plants so, I thought we could plant them in some creative pots.
What kind of paints should we be using that is long lasting and durable on terracotta? Should I put a final layer of enamel or something similar on it when we are finished?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer me!

Answer
Good morning,
I hope this is what you are looking for....DecoArt makes "patio paints"...especially good for terra-cotta pots, these can be purchased at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. Here's how I did one last year. First scrub outside of pot with soap and water...then use vinegar to be sure all soap is removed...let dry at least overnight or in the very hot sun. I downloaded a picture of a frog on a lily pad and other objects such as bees, flowers, etc..(I am not a free hand artist by any means). I then used tracing paper to transfer objects to the pot...then used my patio paints to paint them. I let these dry for at least 2 days just to be sure and then I use a clear satin, indoor/outdoor spar urethane minwax spray by Helmsman. This pot I finished was to cover a well head outside and we live in Michigan which gets snow etc. and this pot still looks as good as the day I put it out there. I am going to be making some more for my patio so should you need more info...I would be glad to assist...you can email my yahoo addy.
Hope this helps...Elaine

What is a good brand of yarn to use for crocheting?

Tinker

What is a good soft yarn that is good for crocheting blankets and hats? I have been using the yarn from Wal Mart. But, it is coarse and itchy. Where could I find better suited yarn to use? And what is a good brand to use?
The yarn I have been using is Red Heart. I am fine when I use it to crochet, just when it comes to wearing it does it itch me like crazy. Which totally sucks because my aunt makes me all kinds of cute beanies that I can't wear if it touches my skin.

Answer
It isn't necessarily the brand of yarn I would be concerned with. It looks like you are sensitive to certain fibers. Look on the yarn label and try to avoid acrylic and wool. Some nylon can make you itch as well, but not as bad and it is very soft.

Both my sons and I are "yarn sensitive". This is why I usually stick to cotton only on items which will touch our skin, including garments and afghans.

There are lots of different cotton yarns in all different price ranges. Some less expensive types are Lily - Sugar 'n Cream, Peaches & Cream, and Kitchen Cotton by Lionbrand. All of these are worsted weight (same as the Red heart you have been using) and are usually available at Wal-Mart, Michaels Crafts Stores and Joann Fabrics. These yarns work up nicely.

If you would like a higher quality yarn for a finer hat or sweater, I really like Plymouth Fantasy Naturale Yarn. You can buy it online here:

http://www.herrschners.com/Product/Plymouth+Fantasy+Naturale+Yarn.aspx

It is a little more expensive, but it has more yards / ounces per skein than most cotton worsted yarns. I like it very much. It is cabled so it doesn't shred, pill and split as easily as your lower end worsteds. Also, it has a slight sheen which is lovely.

Tahki Stacy Charles makes a good yarn called Cotton Classic. It comes in two weights - worsted and DK "double knitting" weights. DK is between worsted and sport. It is quite a bit more expensive, but, for hats you wouldn't need a lot.

If you would like to try an even thinner choice, say a sportweight yarn, one I really recommend is Grace by Paton Yarns.

http://www.herrschners.com/Product/Patons+Grace+Yarn+1.aspx

Again, it is more expensive than your lower end cotton or acrylic yarns. But it is worth it if you want a garment which will turn out lovely with a fine hand. Cotton yarns which kind of shimmer are mercerized.

My very favorite cotton yarn is by Bernat and is called Cottontots. It is a larger worsted weight. The skeins are large in yardage as well. It is so soft, really nice to the touch. It is a baby yarn and comes in many pastels. But there are also some brighter colors as well, some varigateds, and some new country colors. I really like it and use it all the time.

http://www.bernat.com/product.php?LGC=cottontots&SPP=999

Make sure you don't use too small of a hook when working with cotton. If you want garments to drape beautifully, use a slightly larger hook than called for on the label. Cotton shrinks a bit also. You might consider making it in one size larger to account for shrinkage.

Also, please allow me to give you another word of advice. Do NOT trust the knots that the manufacturer uses to join two ends in the skein. These knots are tiny and do NOT hold. If you are crocheting along and come upon a knot where two ends have been tied together, cut the yarn and join the new end just as if you are beginning a new skein of yarn. Leave at least an 8 inch tail and later weave it in with a darning needle, zigzagging back and forth on the back of the work. I took the easy way out a couple of times and learned my lesson the hard way! The baby afghan I had given as a gift had a big gaping hole in it after it was washed. How embarassing! I was able to fix it for her enough to use, but it never looked "perfect" after that.

Good luck!

Q. My daughter is 7 months old and I was just wondering what age did your babies cut their first tooth and learned to crawl. I can see two little white areas on her bottom gums but they haven't broke through yet. Also she is trying to crawl. She just hasn't figured out how to get up on those knees! I give her plenty of tummy time to help her practice! I know all babies are different and they develop and learn on their own pace. Just want to hear different stories from different parents! Thank you!

Should i mkae my not yet born sister a knitted baby blanket? Free patterns for beginners?

Kelsi

My sister is going to be born in september. Ithought it would be a good memory if i made her a blanket. I never knitted before. Do i use stright needles or circular for a baby blanket? Could you rns leave me a free pattern ?A basic easy one. Please leave a couple of patterns and websites. If you know of a website with free easy patterns please post it. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanksss. And leave detailed answers !

Answer
That sounds like a great idea. And the Internet has all sorts of help for you in learning to knit!

You may want to get started by knitting a baby hat for your new sister. Once finished, the hat will be a nice gift, and you will have skills to tackle the blanket, a much larger project.

These web sites will walk you through the getting-started-to-knit process. You will need needles and yarn to get started. Most people start with straight, aluminum needles, but you can use circular needles if you want. Most people start with smooth worsted-weight yarn (Category 4) in a medium color. The needle sizes that go with that yarn are 5 mm (US 8), 5.5 mm (US 9) and 6 mm (US 10).

KnittingHelp.com has super videos and some written instructions. You can choose between Continental style and English style instructions for most of the videos.
http://www.knittinghelp.com/

Lion Brand Yarns has a learning center with both illustrated written instructions and videos. You will be asked to register to gain access to the web site. It's fast, free, and safe to do so, and you will gain access to not only the how-to materials but also hundreds of useful free patterns.
http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/faq-search.cgi?store=/stores/eyarn&learnToKnit=1&utm_source=Learning-Center&utm_medium=Learn-Knit&utm_campaign=TopNav

The Craft Yarn Council has not only beginner instructions to get you started but also huge amounts of information you can use later: needle sizes, yarn sizes and characteristics, how to read a pattern (with abbreviations), and more!
http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/?q=instructions_kn.php3

The web companion for "Knitting for Dummies" has a huge amount of background and supplementary information that you will need as you continue to knit. You may want to bookmark this site for later.
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/crafts-hobbies/Knitting.html

Free patterns you may like:
http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/90277AD.html?noImages= Read the reviews--they have helpful hints

http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/BK4K-0603004.html?noImages= Use any worsted-weight yarn

This blanket pattern is rated more advanced than "beginner" because it involves holding two strands of yarn together at the same time and changing colors. Other than that, its very easy. It's a gorgeous effect, too. http://www.caron.com/projects/ss/ss_gradient_garter_bb.html

Which is easier and more cost effective for moms of multiples cloth or disposable diapers?

<3

I've been scouring the web trying to find opinions about diapering for multiples. I've seen some wonderful sites, but I haven't found any price comparisons. Which is easier and more cost effective for mom of multiples? If any of you have any websites, I would be so very grateful. Thanks.

Answer
I couldn't stand the thought of using disposables when we did and we just have one girl who is 16 months. We used disposable for the first three months. I HATED and LOATHED (two words I don't use freely or often) the thought of knowin that they were made with chemicals, petroleum (yep, the same stuff from which gas comes; most plastics are made with it, too), and really, God knows what (and probably stuff God didn't naturally make), were only being used once, and then dropped in a landfill (or worse, a body of water) to leech chemicals into the soil and water for all eternity. I also didn't like the message I was sending-- Being "green" is part of who I am. (I was "green" and raised "green" before it was even a pop culture adjective.) The main reason I became vegan was because of what factory farming does to the environment. Yet, I'm using disposable diapers. For what? Laziness? Unwillingness to show good examples to my daughter? It worked out that my husband would do the laundry at night when he was up studying. Now, we both do it when we have a few minutes. (He's a pastor, and works in his church office in the mornings and goes on calls and visits and meetings in the afternoon.) He still likes to stay up at night to get work done, so he will do it then, too.

I don't know how much money we saved in the past 12 months or so, even with the start up costs. I'm quite sure it's in the hudreds of dollars.

If we have twins the next time around, we will buy more cloth diapers. Also, by the next child, my daughter might be old enough to help some, even if it's "just" folding diapers and putting them away.

Essentially, we stared with G Diapers. They were nice, but still pricey. My husband got the idea to put in the pre-fold diapers in them. We fold them into the rectangle and then under in the front. We started out with several of the pre-folds that we got for free. (Gifts to be used for burp cloths [we used old towels and rags for that], ones that my mother found when people left thigns behind in rental stoage garages, houses and apartments [she manages properties], etc. Some of the new packages were bought with gift cards.) Even with what we actually bought out of pocket and buying new G Diapers start packages, we've still saved money. Even with detergent.

We also have some all-in-ones that we bought through Craigs List that we use overnight because they are heavier and hold leaks better. (If she leaks we just hang the one of five outisdes up to dry and put on a clean one.)

On rare occasions we do use disposables from a package we bought from Whole Foods. That's only when all the outsides need to be washed or we leave our daughter with our MIL. (We've explained the system to her, but she doesn't quite get it. The last time I left our daughter with my MIL, I put together some diapers for her and some all-in-ones to avoid using a disposable.)

The Mothering magazine site has a cloth diapering section on its boards.

That being said, we have decided that we will try to not have two children in diapers at the same time, unless we have twins. Theoretically, by then, our daughter might be old enough to help out, too. And there are plenty of capable, older women in our congregation who would come over and help, just for the pleasure of helping.

5 year old girl: A really big and cute stuffed animal

12 year old girl: Giftcard to a shopping place/iTunes or iPod case or money

3 year old boy: Maybe a really cool toy truck

Baby boy: A "wubby"! (Blanket with his fave cartoon character, teddy bear, etc)

10 year old boy: A cool Graphic T-shirt or money/giftcard/iPod accessories

19 year old and 16 year old boy: Money, giftcard, Gamestop giftcard, Starbuck giftcard, iTunes card, or video game (Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield Bad Company 3, Skyrim, etc)

Whats a really good first pregnancy baby shower gift?

Sorted Det

My cousin is having a baby girl! This is her first pregnancy, and she's fairly young, 21-23 years old. The pregnancy wasn't planned so I know there is going to be A LOT of things she'll need!

I was wondering if any mom's out there could help me out with the shower gift? I'm totally broke, but I'm sure I can scrounge up 40$ or so!

I live in another state and I want something that wont cost and arm and a leg to send.

<3<3<3 the help!

Answer
Does she have a name picked out? If so, how about a cute, personalized sign for the nursery that accents the décor? Personalized gifts are the most "unique" of all, and they are always treasured. They have cool ones under "Personalized Art" at: http://www.mysweetandsour.com/ The artist is a mom. I have two for my twins: "Safari Adventures" for Brayden and "Express Train" for Bryan. The smaller one is in your price range, and the they will ship directly for you. Done!

What is the traditional gift for the doctor that delivered your child?

Ozymandias

I am considering a gift for the Doctor that delivered my child. What is the traditional gift for such an event?

I was thinking a 'silver dollar' or something similar.

Thanks.
Just some info:

The doctor is a Military Doctor, so he doesnt get 'phat paid' for doing a good job.

Also, he did such a wonderful job, I think he deserves a small gift...

Answer
I know that people will say you are paying enough either out of pocket or through insurance for the birth of your baby. However, I did feel compelled, when my daughter was born to get a small gift for the doctor. I just felt that all the nurses, assistants and the doctor in the practice were so amazing and made me feel so comfortable for my 9 months, I really wanted to give a more personal thank.you.

So about a month or so after my daughter was born I went and bought a few cookie tins with "Mrs. Fields" cookies in it. I stopped by the office one afternoon after lunch and dropped them off with a thank you note and picture. That way it was a thank you to the entire office for such excellence in care.

They were so appreciative. It was nice because it was something for the whole office to enjoy. And the money was nominal, I spent under $20. It made me feel good to give them that token of appreciation.

Is it to early to give a baby gift to Jewish man?

bleweyez20

One of the Doctors that I work with is due to have a baby in a couple of weeks. I am planning a trip to his office this week. I want to purchase him a gift for the baby. However, I remember hearing that the Jewish Religion believes that you don't prepare for the baby until it is here.
Can someone enlighten me to the beliefs. I don't want to give him a gift early then have him feel a negative stigma attached to it.

Answer
You are correct. We don't wish "Mazel Tov" wishes (loosely defined as Congratulations), until a baby is born. Instead we say "Bshaah Tova" - All in a good and healthy time. You never know what may happen for good or bad G-d forbid, so it isn't appropriate to give gifts early. Especially when you don't know what it will be! That isn't to say that the parents can't prepare and buy a crib and newborn needs etc!!!

baby gift for 5 month old image
Q. I accidentally fell asleep without transferring my 5 month old son to his crib, he falls asleep in his swing every night, and the night I left him in it, he slept through the night. I tried it again a few times, and it is consistent - in his swing he sleeps through the night, in his crib he wakes up at least 3 times a night - should I let him sleep in his swing? Is there any danger or concern about doing so?
I'd really appreciate the input of others on this one, it is really tempting when you are so tired to do anything for a full night's sleep, but I don't want to cause him problems down the road...
Thanks for your thoughts!
yes, we have the rechargeables, only way to go!

Answer
I think its great! Although I recommend getting rechargeable batteries and charger (I sometimes get people this for shower gifts if I see they have a swing on there.

How to celebrate Thanksgiving with child when you're not together?

colleen008

My ex has our daughter for Thanksgiving...I have no plans for the holiday and he and his family have invited me to celebrate with them. I'm very hesitant.

She is only 5 months old so all of this "split time" business is very new to me. The way my ex broke up with me 6 months ago when I was pregnant has left me very shattered to say the least. I just don't feel comfortable celebrating Thanksgiving with them when it feels like I'm "playing house" with a family who will never fully be mine.

Anyways, my ex has said that they ARE my family and he wants me to feel that they are. He also feels its important that we celebrate holidays together so our daughter can feel some sense of normalcy. But wasnt him breaking up me the BIGGEST disrupter of normalcy for our daughter? Its not my fault that we are even having this conversation. I feel like he is saying I should "do it for my daughter" at the very least and is making me feel like I should suck it up and be the bigger person.

What do you think I should say/do?? Maybe it is better for our daughter if I just suck it up but what happens when the time comes when other significant others become involved??

Answer
This could be a very awkward situation. At the same time, it could be a very good one as well.

Once you have a child with someone else, they become a part of your life FOREVER. One of the most important things you can do, however, is remain civil and communicate with your ex for the good of your daughter. Put aside any hard feelings you may feel for your ex. Your feelings are well justified about not wanting to "play house" with a family that you won't be a part of. You don't have to spend all evening there or spend any time with your ex.

I have a child from a previous relationship and would have welcomed being invited to family functions only for the fact that my daughter could see her biological father and his family, especially his grandparents, whom I dearly loved. Instead, he chose nothing to do with her after I left him when she was 10 months. I invited him and his parents to her first birthday party and he brought a few gifts the day after and his parents sent a card with a gift certificate in it. After that, I didn't invite them to anything else since I didn't feel they showed genuine interest in seeing our daughter. She is now 10 years old.

My fiance has a daughter who is 2 from a previous marriage. They have joint custody but the mother will not allow ANY extra visitation. This breaks my fiance's heart as we only have her every other weekend and the days before or after holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving. His ex will not communicate with him in ANY way regarding the baby, so we never know if she is sick, how potty training is coming along, and what may be happening in the baby's life that we should know about. Despite this situation, my ex would bend over backwards if it meant we could see the baby more, especially on the holidays. He hates the thought of taking his ex back to court AGAIN to see the baby more, but unfortunately, it has to be done.

Try to keep the doors of communication open regarding your daughter. It will benefit your daughter tremendously after she gets a little older to know that both parents love her and can get along.

When you buy clothes from Baby Gap online, do they come in plastic bags AND have tags on them (like Gymboree)? Or, are they just in the plastic bags? I like to save clothes my kids don't wear for b-day gifts, showers, etc. but cannot save them for gifts if I opened the plastic bag purchased online.

I have had them come both ways. Most of the time, they just come in the bag - no hang tags on the actual item.

What is a good online baby store based in the US?

Lolita B

I live in Australia but would like to buy a gift certificate from a US-based online baby store for my friend who lives in the US.

As it is to celebrate the imminent arrival of her first baby, I would like to choose a nice store, not just Target or Amazon or bargain-basement places.

Please recommend a reputable online store based in the US, with a wide range of baby products at reasonable prices. Thank you.

Answer
I love www.poshtots.com, sooooo beautiful :)

How much should I spend on a wedding gift for a distant relative?

Factoring the following:
1) I just had a baby so money is tight.
2) We're traveling to the wedding which is a bit costly.
3) My husband, baby and I will be attending.
4) We're not close with the bride or groom.

Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Answer
Unless this is a small, backyard wedding, babies don't belong.

You're "not close with the bride and groom" - so why go?

Money is tight - why pay to travel?

Catering halls charge a lot per person. It is rude to go and not cover the cost of your food, plus a gift on top of that.

Decline the invitation and send a card with $25-$50 as a gift.

What kind of gift do you get for Dad from the baby?

Q. I am scheduled to be induced with our first child on Wednesday of this week.

With all the attention myself and the baby will receive I would like to get a thoughtful, simple gift for my husband from our baby and myself. My husband is a police officer so any type of picture frame or office/desk decoration won't work. Any ideas? Thanks!!
Thanks for all the great gift ideas guys! It's hard to pick now!!

Answer
a sterling key chain engraved with the baby's info would be nice. what a delightful idea! wish i'd thought of something like this years ago.

Is it tacky to include a message on a baby registry that says "gift cards would be great too"?

gift for baby message image

Zoe's Mom

I'm pregnant with my first baby and I really need everything. I've gotten tons of adorable dresses and that kind of thing but I'm worried about how we will afford expensive things like the crib and car seat? Do you think it would be tacky to include a message on our registry that said something like "gift cards would be great too!" or should I just leave it as is? I just thought it might be easier to afford the big things if we received some gift cards as gifts. What are your thoughts?

Answer
It would be tacky to ask for gift cards. Some people see this as you not wanting their gift just their money. Put the big items on your registry. Some people may want to go in together to get them for you. I know at Target you can put on your registry that you would accept gift cards as well, but to add that message could offend some people. Also remember that some things you may get double of or just don't like and when you exchange them you can put those toward your bigger items. That's what I did with my first one. I got 2 of everything it seemed like, lived in a small town and had nowhere to register. When I took everything in to exchange, I ended up with almost $100 to spend on the things I didn't get but wanted.

What are the basics when it comes to a baby shower?

YETi

I'm kind of clueless when it comes to baby stuff. I'm wondering when I should plan a baby shower and what I should register for versus buy myself later on. I was told diapers are my main priority for the most part to buy, and the baby shower and family will provide me with other necessities. Also, I don't know what activities are involved in a baby shower.

Answer
Wow, whoever said it was wrong, so the person basically said to you to expect everyone to give everything while you just grab gifts!? It's the opposite: you buy the big stuff (crib, matress, changing table, stroller, car seat, chair, dresser...), and ask the guests only the basic needs mainly related to baby layette and baby care products, ie, you should register for diapers in various sizes, bottles, burp clothes, receiving blanket, hooded towels, quilt, crib sheets, mosquito net,anti-suffocation pillow, baby shampoo, diaper rash ointment, hypoallergenic soaps, nail clipper, brush and comb set, some rattle or teether and clothes also in various sizes (0 - 3 months, 3 - 6 months, 6 - 9 months, 9 - 12 months and 12 - 18 months). Smaller items are actually way more useful than larger items so it's good having a "stock" of them.
Games in baby showers are the most annoying thing in the world! I'd rather just sit and have a casual conversation about motherhood, ask other mothers who are in the baby shower about funny moments that happened during birth or something like. But you can pass a blank book so each guest can write messages and wishes for you and the baby, or give each guest a card to them write their messages and then put into a pretty box. This can become a good memento. But if you want games, there are a lot of them, just search and you will find something that pleases you.

What are some good ideas for a valentine's gift for my boyfriend?

cheyenne4e

I want to give my boyfriend a great valentine's day gift. something that will be special. got any ideas?

Answer
i kno this is for Valentine's Day.
but my idea could be used for pretty much anything.
for Christmas i went to a craft store, and bought a decent sized handmade box with a lid that latched, got some paintbrushes and some paint in his favorite colors. then painted his name on top of the lid, and on all for sides of the box itself i painted Chinese symbols that said "Hope" "Strength" "Love" and "Peace". then i filled the box wit his favorite (and mine) cologne and just other little things. he really loved it. and it's wasn't even that expensive. he'd told me after he'd gotten it he was like "baby, thank you so much. i love this. nobody has ever done anything like this for me. thank you." and it made me really happy. =) lol. so maybe that would work for you too. =)

I am going to my friends moms baby shower in 2 weeks and i dont have a gift. Its a girl and its due September 22nd and i look for sales but it is all summer stuff. I need some help, please send me links to stores on the internet that have some cute cheap fall clothes(FOR GIRLS)!

Answer
Check the mother's gift registry. Your friend should be able to tell you what stores her mom is registered with. You can often look at the store's website and order online. And the mother often chooses gifts in a range of prices, so you can choose what you can afford. Also, the gift registry will tell you if someone has purchased the items for the mother already.

Can I buy the new mom a gift for her baby shower?

weerd187

I am going to a baby shower for the first time and I am planning on buying things from the registry, but I also want to get some different cute things, and hand make a few beanies (as the baby is due in December) but I was wondering if it is ok to buy the new mom a gift? Like soothing bath stuff or lotions, spa gift card? Is that ok?

Answer
Of course it is; Mom's not gonna complain!

Sure, it's a 'baby shower' which is typically all about the baby, but if someone had gotten me a spa card or bath accessories, I would have been thrilled! :) It's a great idea that no one ever thinks about - & I'm sure the new mom will be extremely thankful! Us new moms have ALOT on our hands, and a gift like that means alot!

Is it poor etiquette to buy a gift that isn't on the registry?

I'm going to a baby shower this Sunday. The preggo lady is registered at Babies R Us. This is inconvenient for me because there isn't one near by me at all and I'm a poor college student. I have a gift card for a department store, so I figured I would just use that to buy a baby outfit or something. This way I can pop into a store that is convenient and not have to dip into my cash. Is that weird? Do I really have to stick to the gift registry?

Answer
Not at all! I get invited to many parties, including baby showers (and I'm not the most social of people...) and the only thing that I really care is to know the baby's gender. I never give a gift that is on the registry list. I don't like people telling me what I should buy, which brand it should be, what color the mother-to-be want and which store I should buy it. I buy only a nice and really "useful" gift (bath items, diapers, wipes...), not the cutesy and very pricey things that parents ask for just to show off (and it's poor etiquette). I buy at the store that is most convenient for me. Originally, there was no requirement to gifts at baby showers. It was invented later by consumerist, inelegant and selfish people.
Buy a gift where it's most convenient for you and within your budget.

How many items from your baby registry did you receive at your shower?

danceforev

I'm trying to plan out and budget for everything we will need for the baby. I'm going to register at Target and Babies R Us but I'd like to know approximately how many of those items I can expect to receive at my shower. If you didn't receive items from your registry, did you receive gift cards/ money and gifts that were not listed on your registry?

Answer
It depends on the number of guest at the shower. I had 30 to 40 people and got about 20 or so gifts, the rest gave money and gift cards.

She lives in another state so I do not see her very often right now. Also is it too early to ask? The baby is due in May.
Lol, well I'm not really worrying about it. I just want to have fun with it because it is a big deal.
Unfortunately all of our friends and family, especially close enough friends to guide our child in Catholicism, are in another state.

Answer
You could send her a gift like an engraved frame or something along the lines saying "Godmother to Be" or a shirt, I guess... that would be really cute! Don't include any notes, let her figure it out herself and call you with LOADS of Thanks :)

What would be a meaningful gift for a Godmother to give a newborn baby girl?

BobTheBlaz

My friends are having a baby girl in August and they keep dropping subtle hints that they want me to be the childs Godmother. What would be a meaningful gift that I can give to the child that she can love and cherish forever?

Answer
If you sew you could make her a special baby blanket or even a small quilt... if you give her a quilt, as she grows you can give her new pieces to add to it, once you get a couple new rows then you could teach her how to quilt. A quilt though needs to have special fabrics....as she grows. A music box engraved especially for her.... with her birth information on it... I hope this helps...

Answer
It doesn't have to be anything special. If youre getting a gift it should be for the baby maybe a cute outfit or somethign the baby may use. But it's just a baby naming and when I've attended we've never given anything in particular.

Miscarriage memorial- What kind of tree should I plant for our miscarriage memorial?

gift for baby loss on Home > Gift Ideas >
gift for baby loss image

Jessica

I just recently suffered from a miscarriage. Our sweet baby's funeral is in a couple of weeks, the hospital performs a burial service for all of the miscarried babies for that month, and the burial site is in the hospital cemetery. We would like to have our own memorial site that is just for our baby. We are going to plant a tree in our yard.

I would like a tree that has beautiful flowers on it. I need ideas of what kind of tree would be good for this though. Help!!
Thank you!

Answer
First of all, I'm sorry for your loss.

Five years ago, my first pregnancy was with twins, and there were serious complications -- at 25 weeks, I gave birth to 1 stillborn baby and one who lived only 10 days. Afterwards, we received a weeping cherry tree as a gift from some friends, and planted it in our yard (see images at http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?_adv_prop=image&fr=yfp-t-701&va=weeping+cherry+tree). It's very healthy, and looks great year round, and in the early spring it's covered with beautiful and fragrant light pink cherry blossoms. It attracts birds, bees, and butterflies galore. I would highly recommend the same type of tree. Although expensive, I think, they make nice memorial trees.

Sorry again for your loss!

EDIT -- Although everyone is entitled to their opinions, I disagree with CarbonDated (and you obviously do too, or you wouldn't have asked the question!). The tree we planted does not remind me of my deceased children in a negative way. It's been 5 years -- although I'll never ever forget them, I've grieved, moved on, and healed -- it's not like I burst into tears every time I see the tree (which is every single day). Instead, the tree is a beautiful living thing that inspires me to focus on LIFE, not death. I hope the same will be true for you.

Parents, what do you want to receive for your baby at a baby shower?

>:(

My aunt is having a baby boy in september and her baby shower is at the end of this month. I'm not sure what to get her! I asked her and she said, "Oh you don't need to bring anything," But everyone says that in my family. I just don't know what to buy for the baby!

Answer
Just essentials such as bottles, pacifiers, teethers, rattles, baby blankets. You could even get a couple cute outfits.

You could get a decorative basket and just get a mismatch of the essentials. I did that for my fiance's little sister, who had twins (boy and girl). One basket had a blue ribbon, one had a pink ribbon. They each had an outfit as well as a little stuffed animal (a blue puppy for the boy and a little doll for the girl), there were a couple pacifiers in each, a rattle, some bottles, a pack of wet wipes, a pack of onesies.

It all just depends how much you want to spend.

If you're at a loss for what to get, get a gift card to Wal-Mart or Target and let her choose what she needs. That never fails.

What is the best gift to give while visiting my friend for her delivery in hospital?

I am going to attend her baby arrival party also and I am planning to get some baby geAr at that time but I am out of ideas as to what to give during hospital visit

Answer
The things I would have appreciated in hospital after I had a baby would be some lovely pampering style gifts - so nice bodywash (gently fragranced), hair products, soaps etc, some chocolates or something luxury like that... and this sounds like a random one but it was a lifesaver after my delivery, maybe some femfresh?? They tell you not to use soap on your bits after a vaginal delivery, but femfresh is all ph balanced and doesn't contain soap so its gentle and doesn't sting - I used it after having loads of stiches and it was fab :o) xx

How to afford all of these wedding showers, wedding gifts, baby showers, graduations?

Chris

I am a single gal trying to climb out of debt....I have a limited income and hardly have anything left over after I get paid. I am really struggling. I have a large family & I keep getting invited to wedding showers, weddings, baby showers, graduation parties, birthdays, etc...I simply do not have the money for all of this! I can't afford to keep buying gifts. What to do?

Answer
Maybe explain to your friends the situation you are in and be honest with them , im sure they will still want you there regardless of if you turn up with gifts or not. and if it upsets them, well they are not exactly a true friend afterall if all they want are the presents. You could make them a nice card with a nice verse inside which you can find what to say on the internet. I know i wouldnt mind if someone took the time to do that for me. Good Luck
