How much should I spend on a wedding gift for a distant relative?

Factoring the following:
1) I just had a baby so money is tight.
2) We're traveling to the wedding which is a bit costly.
3) My husband, baby and I will be attending.
4) We're not close with the bride or groom.

Any thoughts?

Money is tight - why pay to travel?

Catering halls charge a lot per person. It is rude to go and not cover the cost of your food, plus a gift on top of that.

Decline the invitation and send a card with $25-$50 as a gift.

What kind of gift do you get for Dad from the baby?

Q. I am scheduled to be induced with our first child on Wednesday of this week.

With all the attention myself and the baby will receive I would like to get a thoughtful, simple gift for my husband from our baby and myself. My husband is a police officer so any type of picture frame or office/desk decoration won't work. Any ideas? Thanks!!

a sterling key chain engraved with the baby's info would be nice. what a delightful idea! wish i'd thought of something like this years ago.
