If you are invited to the baby shower, should you get a birth announcement?

silly_prin

I think it is tacky to not send a birth announcement to someone that was invited and gave a gift at a baby shower. My mom doesn't think it is necessary because none of her friends kid's have sent birth announcements even though she has been invtited to their showers.

Answer
I have been to about 8 or 9 baby showers and never have received one-- I thought that tradition had been pretty much dried out? Maybe thats just around here (in Virginia)...

What would be a thoughtful gift for my husband?

Heather Lo

I want to get my husband a gift commemorate the birth of our first child together. Our baby is due in about 3 weeks, and I wanted to get my husband something special. Men are often left out, such as everyone doting on the pregnant mom, and the mom gets the baby shower, and the flowers brought to the hospital, etc. I want to buy my husband something nice so he is not left out. I just do not have any idea what I am looking for. HELP!

Answer
I got my hubby an engraved cigar cutter for all the nice cigars he was going to hand out.

But depending on what hobbies/interests your husband has.....use those for ideas. If he has a metal baby that he adores (his car of course!!), you could do custom plates, that nice piece of chrome he has been wanting to add under the hood, rims, etc. For the NFL minded hubby, matching custom jerseys or one just for him- ex: "Sam's Dad". The guy who loves music.....tickets to an upcoming concert for a 'guys night out'.

Best of luck to you, him, and the wee little cherub :o)

what do you consider a bestfriend or a close friend?

I tend to give graduation gifts, baby gifts, and wedding gifts to not just my bestfriends and close friends but to people who are just a casual friend who I eat at the lunch table with and hung out with at school. What would you consider a bestfriend or close friend? If someone gave me a graduation gift should I consider them my close friend?

Answer
I would consider the person that gave you the gift at least a good friend I don't know how much time you spend with them. However the time of a relationship is not important I've had friends for over 15 years who I'm very close with and consider brothers, but my best friend and I have been best friends for about 3 years and before good friends for another 3. I consider him my best friend because we agree on the same things, we listen to what one another is going through, we have each other's back, I give him a hard time about his minor faults and he does it right back to me. There is a saying that goes "A good friend is someone you can let laugh with you, but a best friend is someone you can let laugh at you." Also "A good friend will help you move a couch, a best friend will help you hide the body." So whoever you can trust to help you hide a body is most likely going to be your best friend.

What kind of gifts are given for a baby shower?

ESTEE

I am attending my first ever baby shower soon and I honestly don't know what kind of gift I am supposed to give? gift for baby or gift for mom?

Answer
A gift that is useful for mom and baby. Or a luxury kind of gift she may not buy herself.
Useful girfts such as: baby clothes, blankets, toys, supplies, ect.

By luxury gifts, I mean: a baby sling, wipes warmer, bouncy chair, bottle warmer, travel size supplies for her diaper bag.

Just go to Babies R' Us. There is tons of stuff you could get!

If i was baptized a lutheran when i was a baby does that make me always a lutheran?

gifts for lutheran baby baptism image

My Shepher

I am not religious , I'm not sure if i believe in god and i haven't been to a Lutheran place my entire life. I am just curious if i am still a lutheran or an apostate ?
Wait a second lol, How can I make a personal commitment to god if I am a baby ? Sorry, for the sarcasm but I'm naturally gifted in being sarcastic.

Answer
Baptism makes you a child of God. Confirmation makes you a Lutheran.

God made a commitment to you and chose you. Now, as an adult, you can turn away from God and deny His gift of grace. But, man with his sinful nature would not willingly choose God.

What are the main differences in all the different denominations of churches?

Fallen

I was baptized Lutheran but really only went as a child. I want to get control of my life and I think through church, I can do that. I also don't know anything about the bible or churches.

Answer
The biggest differences between churches in Christianity are that some are ecclesiastical (which means they have bishops, deacons, priests and regular folks) or congregational (which means that the people control the church and the pastor is probably just a regular guy elected to head the church).

As far as the ecclesiastical churches go, you have Catholics who are headed by the Pope in Rome. Roman Catholics accept the Bible, as interpreted by the Magisterium (the Pope, the tradition of the church, the bishops, etc.). Catholics are different from other Christians because they often have statues of saints, crucifixes and rosaries and beautiful, stained-glass cathedrals. Catholics also pray to saints, confess to priests and have the Eucharist as their main rite.

Other Ecclesiastical churches include Anglicans/Episcopalians (same church, different countries) and Lutherans. These churches are Protestant, meaning that they were created in protest to practices of Catholic Church. The Anglican Church is headed by the Queen of England, while the Episcopal and Lutheran Church are governed by bodies of bishops. The Lutheran Church was created by Martin Luther. Both Episcopalians and Lutherans have sacraments (baptism for babies, confirmation for young adults, marriage for adults, and anointing of the sick, etc.). They also still organize their church around the liturgy, or the receiving of the Eucharist. Though, both churches deny the Catholic teaching of transubstantiation - in other words that the communion is the literal blood and body of Christ.

Congregational churches are far more numerous and hard to name!

Some of the major denominations in the US include:

Methodists: Principle founder, John Wesley. Methodism was created as a missionary Christian religion intended to spark revival amongst the poor. Methodist services focus around a sermon rather than the Eucharist. Methodists focus on Bible study and personal revelation.

Baptists: Baptists are called Baptists because they reject infant baptism. They broke from the Roman Church because they believed that only adults should be baptised and that children are covered by a special dispensation of grace. Baptists believe in Bible study and prayer. They do not allow alcohol consumption, some ban dancing. Baptist services are organized around a sermon and communion is held very infrequently. Baptists don't believe in a sacramental view of Christian life. They think that baptism and communion are symbols rather than ceremonies that infuse Christians with power.

Pentecostals/Charismatics: Pentecostals believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the most obvious of which is Speaking in Tongues. But they also believe in healings, the casting out of demons, and all of the other colorful things you can imagine the apostles having done. Baptism and communion are just symbols, but they are beloved symbols and practiced frequently.
___

Trying to guess which kind of Christian you'll be without knowing much about the Bible or churches is a daunting process!

I suggest talking to your friends, to see if any of them go to church. They'll probably be glad to bring you along to one of their services. Start reading the Bible and praying to ask God to show you the right church. If you can't find anyone to take you to church, just read your local paper and try to find a church that looks friendly and try a visit. It won't be long until you find the right church for you!

Do I send Thank You cards for baby dedication gifts?

JennaJ

We dedicated our 8 month baby girl to the Lord on Sunday...this is a christian dedication sometimes called a "dry baptism" anyhow, we had a luncheon "reception" party at our home and most people brought cards with money or a small gift like an outfit....

My mom and I are all about mailing thank you cards however, she mentioned for a christening/dedciation it's not customary to send thank you cards, as it is a religous event. Anyone have any experience with this?

Answer
We are dedicating my 5 month old son in September. I would definitely send Thank You notes out. I am not sure of the custom, but I think you should always send thank you notes out after you receive a gift.

I am 14 weeks pregnant with my second baby and even though I didn't breastfeed my first one I think I am going to try it with this baby. I know that it is recommended to breastfeed for 12 months but I just wanted to hear some people's experiences. Thanks!

Answer
Well first off, congrats on being pregnant! It is truly a gift from god to have children...I have a 6 month old and I have been breastfeeding her the whole time on demand. Meaning when she eats, I'm here for her. I plan to breastfeed for as long as she wants too! If its a year or 2 years, I'm going too! I know that sounds like a long time but you will see what I mean once you get the hang of it...GOOD LUCK

He's 4, she's 5, I'm 14.
I'm babysitting them right now, and we decided to make another gift for mom. What's a fun, quick, easy homemade present we can make? I tried a macoroni necklace but we don't have enough different types of pasta.

Answer
I know this is a little late, but there's always next year!

One of my favorite homemade gifts my daughter and I made together when she was little. We took a paper plate and covered it with Christmas wrapping paper. Then we traced her hand on a thin piece of cardboard. We used the cardboard hand as a template and cut out about ten more little hands in red and green construction paper.

We glued the construction paper hands around the edge of the paper plate, glue on little poms poms here and there for decoration and then used a looped pipe cleaner as a hanger. It looks like a festive Christmas wreath!

She's now a tween and rolls her eyes when I hang it every year. But as the Mom, I love it :)

Answer
I'm a pre school Teacher so this one will be fun to answer...I have lots of ideas, so I'll put one out there for you... Do you have paint? and construction paper? If not, use anything you can trace with, " pencil, pen, crayon, marker..but you'll need some kind of paper paper. Using washable paint, lightly paint or place child's foot in it so you can print it on the paper and allow time to dry. .. also do the same thing with each child's hands."Both hands" allow to dry.. if you have no paint trace 1 foot of each child, and do the same with both of their hands and let them color them or paint them... when dry "If painting" cut out and use the hands for wings of an angel... the foot "HEAL" on top, for the angels head... toes pointing down for the bottom of the angels gown. Glue wings in the middle, using the heal so the toes are pointing out. Now draw the eyes, nose and mouth... makes a GREAT tree ornament.Just string at the top and put on the tree. If you would like more ideas...let me know.. Merry Christmas! :-)
Don't forget to put your brother and sisters names and ages on the backs of the angels, and you can add glitter or any other decoration.. Have fun with it... Make one from your hands and foot also... I'll be fun for all of you.

I'm looking for a baby shower game that would result in a gift being opened every now and then throughout the shower. I have in my head the idea of maybe, every time someone says "baby", Mom opens a gift. (But then what would stop people from just saying "baby" a bunch of times so she opens them all at once?) Does anyone have any good ideas on how we could work that?

Answer
That sounds like a great idea! Might make the tedious 'Oh, that's so cute!' of a baby shower a bit more bearable for everyone involved :D

I doubt that people would say 'baby' over & over - that would take the fun out of the game.

My wife and I are thinking of having a baby, but the cost of it scares me. What is the cost in the first few years. We sould likely need daycare 3 days a week.

Answer
day care alone is gonna cost you about $500 a month, diapers (i buy pampers) are about $20 a week and not to mention if you have to buy forumula. I would say assuming you get everything you need for the baby from gifts and family members (which never happens) you would need an extra 800-$1000 a month for daycare and baby essentials. Dont let the number scare you to death. Babies are worth it. Good luck

Is it rude to request gift cards for party?

Roberta Q

I am going to have a birthday party for my 2 year old son and I am going to do like a combo of that and a Jack and Jill baby shower. Being I already have my son and he is only 2 and I am going to be having another boy I already have the majority of the things I need. The only things I need are the every expensive things. I am thinking about asking for gift cards for the baby shower to use towards the expensive things I need. Is that rude or is there a correct way to word it so it wont sound rude?

Answer
First of all, no one should ever give themself a shower! This is even worse than asking for money or gift cards. And a birthday party for a 2 year old should only include very close relatives. You may be thrilled to death with your kid, but not everyone else is.

Sorry, but you are stretching every rule of etiquette with this.

What are good baby shower gift ideas for really close friends?

honeybear

I don't want to bring a gift that looks cheap because we are such good friends, but can's affort to spend over $50. What should I get them? First baby. Boy.
that's CAN'T not CAN'S.

Answer
If you're really good friends, she is bound to remember your gift. I'd get her quite a few things, and $50 can do just that!

I'd get things that STAND OUT. Example, clothes blend in with everything- there is a lot of clothing. But you only need one infant bath tub. I remember my infant bath tub gift the most.

I used it a lot, and when I got it as a gift, it was full of other useful things. I would definitely do a unique gift, not clothing.

So, in my infant tub (the tub was used as the basket).. I got a rubber ducky that said if the water was too hot, a 4-pack of washclothes, 2 hooded towels, and a 4-pack of soap/shampoo/lotion stuff.

It's really up to you, but seriously don't stress over it. Have fun with it ~ good luck

What is the best online advertising for a new website?

gifts for baby visitors image

Denise B

We just opened a new website www.littlebuttercup.com. We specialize in boutique baby gift items and toys. We looking for ways to promote the site. What marketing techniques work best to promote a new website? Does anyone have experience with yahoo! directory? What about purchasing key words?

Answer
Don't waste your $299 annual payments with Yahoo Directory - no one goes there anymore. You can spend that $299 better and get more traffic by buying pay per click advertising. You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com

Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!

Recommend Site Scripts (various) http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Big Nose Bird Recommend this Site http://bignosebird.com/carchive/birdcast.shtml
CGI Resource Index http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

If you are going to read only one piece on search engine optimization, I suggest you read Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com's "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day." http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

What is something special can I do for a mother with a newborn?

cowgal1994

Soon my aunt is going to have her fourth child (YAY! :D) , and I am serving as her helper/nanny. While she tends to her newborn, I will help with house work and watching her other three children. As I understand, many mothers ignore themselves and focus completely on their baby. What is something special I can do for her? Any advice is appreciated! :)

Answer
Oh my gosh, move in with me! :-) When I had a newborn, what I needed most was for someone to keep the house clean - because I wanted it clean, for indoor air quality, etc., not for appearances' sake - do laundry, etc. A major task I had was sending thank you notes for gifts, and this really could not be passed on to someone else, but someone else could run out and buy note cards, help me organize, find addresses, etc.

I was also researching a ton of stuff - how to help baby sleep, whether it was really important that baby follow the "poop chart" the doctors gave us, etc. - but fortunately, your aunt is probably experienced enough not to have to do that.

If you are good with hair, you could help her look nice for visitors by helping with that. People will want to take photos, and it can be awkward. That would have been a nice treat that I would not have thought to request of anyone.

Other ideas include putting fresh linens on her bed, making it up neatly, straightening up the room, etc. That room can be a new mother's whole world.

Even just asking how she is doing, and asking specific questions about her wellbeing, healing, etc. (if you are very close) could be very welcome. You could remind her to do her sitz baths, help facilitate them, etc.

Bringing baby around toddlers with bronchitis?

gift for 9 months old baby boy on Aussiebuby Cute Baby Infant Boys Batman Onesie Romper Party Costume ...
gift for 9 months old baby boy image

Momma G

I have a 9 month old and we are planning on going to a birthday party tomorrow. The mom called me to let me know that the birthday boy is 7 days into bronchitis. I'm a little hesitant to go, but know that my baby should be fine. What precautions should I take with my child around the sick kid? (as my child is a very "hand to mouth" kind of baby!)
Thanks!

Answer
Personally I wouldn't take the chance. Illnesses like bronchitis and other viruses (even if they've been on antibiotics) can be severe in babies if they get the illness.
I think if I were you I'd either run my gift for the birthday child over and tell them that you aren't going to come in because you don't want to take the chance of baby getting sick but wanted to drop off the birthday child's present OR just call in the morning and tell them you're going to not go because you're not comfortable with your baby being around sick kids or kids who are getting over being sick right now. I'm sure they would understand. You could always offer to meet them for lunch somewhere kid friendly next weekend and take any gift you may have had for the birthday kid then.
If your gut tells you not to do this, then don't go. You'll only be sorry if you go from guilt or obligation and you're child gets sick. Right now the only kid you have to worry about is your own.

What is a really good gift to give my brand new lil nephew for Christmas?

My younger brother and his girlfriend just had a beautiful little baybee boy on Nov. 12, 3 days ago. I want to get him a great gift for Christmas since he's my first nephew and this is his first Christmas. I know he'll only be a month old then and won't really know what I got him anyway but still, I want it to be good. Any ideas on an awesome Christmas gift for my sweet lil nephew? :)

Answer
Our daughter was born on Dec 9 and we got her a few baby things, but mostly we got her things for when she was a little older, like 6 months and up. That way we had some toys for a variety of ages up until she turned a year.

I will be living with them for 4 weeks. The family consists of mom, dad, and 4 year old daughter. I have thought about brownie mix and measuring cups, because I have several hispanic friends who had never tried brownies or even knew what they were, until I baked them for them. I got the idea of adding measuring cups from another website.

This wouldn't be all I would take. So please, any ideas would be a GREAT help!

Answer
well im Costa Rican-American and when ever we go visit my family we always bring them snickers chocolate bars and other american candies lol i know it sounds a little odd but yea my grandmother and all my family really loves them lol i dont remember if they have snickers bars in costa rica but if they do im sure they are probably too expensive for the average Costa Rican (my family lives in a very poor area in San Jose so yea when i say "average" i mean that type of people)

-a word of advice though....if the family is stable financially (meaning they have a nice house, nice things, have their children in private schools, their own cars and live in a good neighborhood) then i wouldn't want to take the chance of offending them by bring them american candy....if they CAN afford the candy then it would be a bit insulting to bring them something that they can get themselves ( but that doesnt apply to all gift...i dont know if im explaining myself correctly lol)

- but if you see that they are a humble, modest family (like mine) then im sure they would be more than grateful to have such a luxury that is american candy.

- u know what....to be on the safe side, you could bring them boxes of good quality chocolates like those assorted chocolates form Godiva and Ghirardelli. That way it shows your giving them something extra special (nothing cheap) and it wont insult them either way (and im sure the little girl will love chocolate...i mean, who wouldnt ;-)... ) AND it really wont cost you too too much when you think about it. So yea ...you cant go wrong with mixed cocoa lol

- u could also buy the little girl a really nice coloring book (not something you picked up at a dollar store...like my mom usually does for my little cousins *eye roll* ) like a huge book and a box of Crayola color pencils, markers, crayons ...a whole coloring kit lol. If you win over the baby of the house you'll win over the entire family ...trust me ;-) lol

-or a really nice Barbie or any popular doll from Toys R Us with some nice accessories (again try not to be too cheap about it...im only saying that cuz of my experience with my mother lol)

yea something along those lines....hope this helps!!

if you need any more ideas just let me know lol

Hope you have a great time in Costa Rica, its a beautiful country filled with beautiful people both inside and out ;-) (and im not just saying that cuz im tica lol) ....good luck!!

Registering for a baby shower, whats okay to register for?

NA

I'm throwing a baby shower for a friend. I asked her to go online and register for some gifts.

We're young (I'm 21, she is 23) and this is the first babyshower in our circle of friends.

What kind of things is it okay to register for. Baby-room furniture should be bought by mom and dad right? Like the crib and changing table? Those are pretty big things.

Is it okay to register for semi-big things like a stroller/high-chair/car seat?? Or are those aslo too big?

Answer
Tell her to register for what she wants. A registry isn't telling people that's what they HAVE to get for you, just an idea. Also, many people will go in together on bigger items. It won't hurt to put the crib, etc. on the registry. If she doesn't get it at the shower then she will just have to buy it. If she doesn't register for something then she doesn't have the chance of getting it as a gift. Also, at Babies R Us and Target they will give you 10% off whatever you registered for but didn't get when the baby is born.

what do you get for wedding gift for your parents mother and father of bride?

to be mrs.

What do you get for your parents for paying for your wedding.

Do you get your mom and dad a gift seperately?

What about the groomsmen family will it be a different gift?

My mom likes Belleek stuff so was thinking of getting a large frame by that company and put our photo in it, could this be for my dad too?

Answer
Your parents do NOT want a gift from you.

They want you to have a nice wedding and be happy with your new husband. Period.

Give them a big hug and tell them "Thank You. I love you both."

That's all they want.

If you want to get them a framed wedding picture, that would be the MOST that they'll be comfortable with. Do the same for your husband's parents.

What is a quick homemade craft my little brother and sister can make my mom for Christmas?

Anonymous

But as the Mom, I love it :)

y did everyone hate the war in Vietnam?

Answer
the vietnam war was officially considered a "policing action" much like what we are facing in iraq. this was the first war where guerrilla tactics were used instead of it being mostly a straight fight. most of the soldiers were draftees with vey little want to be there. they were willing to give up thier lives for a cause that most of them didn't even believe in and when they returnd home these american heroes wre spit on, yelled at and many of them still suffer from ptsd today. war is hell and NO war should be liked by anyone even if they are sometimes nescassary. the simple fact is that we had no business being in the region at the time. the french had been fighting the north vietnamese for 10 years before we even came into the picture and they couldn't do any better than we did! quite simply america had never fought a war like this. in all the others it was " there is the enemy kill them". in vietnam you didn't know who the enemy was until it was too late! kids putting bombs in buildings, poisoning drinks and giving them to the troops as
'gifts" it was a bad situation no matter what side you were on.you couldn't turn your back on anyone even the ones that were supposed to be your ally.

war is hell no matter if you are winning or losing. if it wasn't there wouldn't be anything to stop us from waging it. people die on both sides. but to answer your question people hated that particular war because we had no business fighting a battle that had no ramifications on our freedoms. and many people believed that soldiers just went crazy over there and were killing innocent civillians. one of the most popular monachers for a soldier in vietnam was "baby killer". this wasn't true of course but it didn't stop the hippie movement from attacking the returning soldiers with this hate speech. unfortuanately many innocent people WERE killed in that war. they were also killed in the revolutionary war, the civil war, ww1, ww2, korea, desert storm, bosnia, etc. war is war and there will always be collateral damage thats unavoidable. in short all war is bad and should be the last resort of any nation unless they are undeniably attacked and must retaliate in defense of said nation. in vietnam we were never attacked. our government stuck our noses where it didn't belong and our troops were the ones that paid for it with thier lives.
