My very good friend has invited me to her daughter's baptism (and luncheon) this weekend. I'm not Catholic, so I don't know much about the ceremony or etiquette. I actually just found out that gifts are given at these events. What types of gifts are/aren't appropriate from a non-family member? For instance, if I have something small engraved, would that be out of order, or a gift that only godparents give? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A lovely silver spoon engraved with the date and baby's name or family name is a very nice gift--or you could go to a Catholic bookstore and find a Bible or a child's book of prayers and Bible stories so the parents can read them to the little girl later.
Almost anything is "appropriate"--something that commemorates the day and the event. A rosary or pretty decorative crucifix might be nice. This is the time to get a gift that is particularly "Christian" in nature--not like a birthday or for Christmas where you would buy toys or clothing. And it should be specifically "Catholic" as well, although if you're not Catholic, you might have some difficulty figuring out what the differences are. That's why if you shop at a Catholic store, you'll find many ideas. Check in google for "catholic stores online" for baptismal gifts.

What is a good gift to give for a baby's Catholic baptism? Recently when I went to my boyfriend's Godson's baptism, the presents consisted of four rosaries, two crosses (plus a crucifix), a few bible and saint books, and at least three stuffed animals that pray. What can I get my best friend's baby for his Baptism this weekend that is not the same old cliche Baptism gift??? PLEASE HELP.
Answer
There is a store called "Things Remember" that engraves. If there is one close to you, they have great gifts, like blankets and all sorts of things. Find something you like and have it engraved with his name and the date of his Baptism.
