Should one give a gift at both baby shower and when baby is born?

Do people expect to get a gift when the baby is born, if you already gave them a gift at the baby shower? Is that the proper thing to do?

If there is a baby shower and you attend, then no further gifts would be expected. That is the purpose of the shower.

I would like to buy a gift for a friend who recently had a baby born with a pretty severe case of spina bifida. Is there a good gift I could buy that the baby might like - or that his parents might like more than any others. I'm just not sure...

Almost anything you would buy a baby without spina bifida is fine. Avoid latex, since a lot of spina bifida babies have a latex allergy. Whatever you get for the baby, I would throw in something nice for the parents too, since having a special needs baby is very stressful.
