No...this is not to be mean or ignorant. But I do notice a lot of toy or gift products in Japan all have that "kawaii" look. All of the dolls, silverware, posters, stationery, purses, etc. have little cartoons on them with beady black eyes, small mouths and cute little faces. They are adorable but I wonder where this may have stem from culturally?

Answer
Small, cute, and baby doll looks are just their perceptions of what's feminine. The idea of femininity varies from culture to culture.

How can I ask our bosses to pitch in for my coworker's baby present?

Naughty

My friend/coworker and I work in a department of 5 people, the other 3 all being our superiors on different levels. They are all older Japanese men, and there are definite culture differences.
She is almost 7 months pregnant, and although I am organizing a baby shower for her at work, I do not think my bosses would want or feel comfortable attending. In the Japanese culture, things such as baby showers are very much " a woman's thing". However, I feel that her having a baby is a huge life event and that our department should all pitch in on a nice present or gift card to present her with before she goes on maternity leave.

What do you think?

Answer
I think they would like to pitch in for your coworker's baby present. Giving gift is important also in Japan, specially for the baby birth. But that's also depend on how your coworker's relation with the bosses. And, how you can announce it to the bosses.

The easiest way to do is to explain that is the culture of your country for pitching to the baby present. And DO NOT hesitate to explain.

Pitching in Japan called WARIKAN.

Say like this:
"warikann de akachan umareta no puresennto wo kanojo ni kaitainode, isshoni warikann wo shimasennka? ikurademo iidesho, yoroshiku onegaishimasu."
