My friend just had her 1st baby on July 12th.They are LDS.I have known for quite along time they have baby blessings. I am sure its similar to protestant baby dedication.But can anyone tell me this? What age is it done? What is, if any gift is appropriate? Can a non-LDS person attend the service? Thank You!

It is a simple procedure. It takes place in the chapel during a regular Sunday meeting. The father or a priesthood holder along with other priesthood holders gather around the baby. They put one hand underneath and one on the shoulder of the man to their left. The person performing the blessing announces the name of the baby and then gives the child a personal blessing of health, and future development such as education, marriage, etc. Any one can attend. No gifts are expected.

Now I'm asking this question purely as a question, looking for advice and answers..not judgmental comments. My husband and I are believers of god..However, we do not attend church. We believe in our home and hearts. We were thinking about having a dedication service to dedicate our baby daughter to the lord. Do we have to start going to church..and to the church to have our daughter dedicated? My Mother in law is the only one in our family that attends Church..however, I have some personal reasons as why I wouldn't want to attend her church or have my child's service there..but I don't want to offend my mother in law. I have another church in mind..but I am totally lost on all this..how I go about it..what I have to do for the service etc..and just looking for some helpful advice :)

Catholicism existed for Centuries before any Protestant sect was formed .Centuries after Jesus formed the First church the catholic church.. Those in the Book of Acts are the first Christians, and they believed what would be called Catholic doctrine today. ANYONE can read the Book of Acts for themselves and see. Had Protestantism existed during the time of Acts, the first Christians would have rejected It completely Because the Bible was not yet formed neither the doctrines of OSAS , Faith alone, and Sola scriptura. .
Also there's Heretic Christians who also completely rejected Catholicism, long before Martin Luther was even born. At the Council Of Nicea they were rejected and were called Arians. Which is why we have the belief In the Trinity they rejected the heretics.
And there is no "pope" in the Bible Because they were called Bishops Which is what they are still called. Every "pope" is a Vicar Of Christ.
There were ALWAYS saved believers outside the catholic , who did not know The full truth of Catholicism but that was by the grace of the savior they would have been catholic if given the time.
