i have seen or talked to this co-worker almost every day for the past 4 years and i had no idea his wife was even pregnant until she gave birth today. he said that they wanted to keep it low-key because his wife has had miscarriages before and it has been stressful for them to have another child. she gave birth to a healthy baby boy today that was 7 lbs. and 3 weeks premature. i would consider us friends outside of work although we rarely "hang out" and now knowing his and his wife's history conceiving i respect and understand their privacy by not telling people. and people i had no idea she was pregnant...she's a heavier woman but i just saw her 5 days ago when i was over their house and had no idea. maybe i am naive and/or unobservant but honestly i had no clue. so back to my question, do i buy them a gift for their new child or not because they wanted to keep it a secret? and if so, what do i buy? i am the typical guy and i dont know much about babies but i want to do the right thing. any good advice is welcomed.

Get them a gift (Target or Babies R Us gift cards are always appreciated!) and a nice card but give it to them outside of work.

If you are creative at all, a diaper cake is a great gift! I got one at my baby shower and I think it was my favorite present. You can find pics online if you do a Google search but the one someone made me was a lot nicer than the ones I've seen online. You just roll up diapers and arrange then on a platform in a few teirs with ribbons and binkies, washcloths, rattles, etc to decorate it. It was awsome and I've been able to use everything on it - so practical!
If you're not very creative or are your brother is using washable diapers, another great gift I got was a big laundry basket (You know they are going to be doing a lot of laundry) filled with all sorts of baby essentials like wipes, bottles, bibs,
baby-friendly laundry detergent, blankets, etc. I liked the practical gifts best. I got a lot of cute outfits and my daughter only got to wear most of them once before she outgrew them! They grow so fast!
