It really depends on the culture where u live.
But,the usual thing is,when u meet them at hospital,u must give them something like flowers or a box of chocolate,whatever feels right to u. Remember,the gift usually is for the mother and not the baby.
Later,like after a few weeks u generally get a gift for baby(like some toy or clothes).

When to give gifts when several events are going on?

My dil, is expecting the second baby in January. Is it ok to give the newborn gift with Christmas gift? Or do I wait and give after baby is born? She isn't having a shower this time but know it is good to have baby items ready beforehand.
What is a good, sensible gift to give when she's in the hospital?

I got the mother some nice relaxing type gifts; a candle, in her fav scent and a nice knitted throw and a gift package for the little one to be. I am done, thanks.

Give the newborn gift after the baby is born. As far as what to give her when she is in the hospital......I don't know her. She may be worn out and need rest, she may want to be lavished with flowers to celebrate giving birth, she may want a cute outfit to bring the baby home in.....it really depends on the mom. Different women want different things (that is why we are all so difficult usually) I don't know her, but I'm sure if you think about the type of person she is you can come up with what she would love.
