is my 9 month old gifted or above average in intelligence for his age?

Q. There's many things that strike me as unusual about my little one. When i read to him his picture books and tell him to point at the dog, cat, girl he will hover his fingers over the things i tell him to look for. He pays very good attention to when i read to him. One time when i was playing with him he was giggling like crazy because i kept pretending to sneeze and then all of a sudden he goes "achoo" he does a pretend sneeze too. He then smiled up at me while i was in complete shock that he could play along and make the sound.
I guess the last thing thats the kicker is that as of yesterday my boy gives me things when i ask him to. For example if he's playing and i tell him "Jacob give me the toy" and i hold out my hand he will stop playing, look me in the eye and give me the toy in my open hand. Not only does he give it to me, but with his other hand he will close my hand as if he's teaching me to how to hold it!

He's crawling and reaching all his other milestones just fine and he's the biggest chatterbox. I know i might seem like im gushing over my son, but i really must know...is he gifted? is this normal?Any other moms have babies his age who do these things?

Answer
It is too early to tell if your baby is gifted. He sounds normal. My mother -in-law was a child prodigy (one of those really really smart people that becomes a doctor at 16. She was a slower learner before 2-3 years. So what I am saying is, you never know. My husband is extremely smart too and he didn't walk until 17 months old. He was aslo very athletic too, so walking late didn't indicate lack of physical ability either.

I have met some really stupid people who walked early. the point I am trying to make is, stop obsessing what you child is or is not. They are who they are, special in their way. Creating false standards and hopes for them is not helpful. Their gifts will be revealed in time. But it is much too early to tell. The milestones your baby is making now are wonderful in the innocence and discovery. Thre does not have to be more to it for it to be amazing.

Besides, most of the time the people in this world who do the best things are those that work the hardest. A girl i went to school with always had average learning ability scores and she was our province's scholar (highest GPA). Einstein himself said that genius is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration.

best gift for a eight month old baby girl?

As a mother of a 9 month old baby boy, I can tell you what I wouldn't want - CLOTHES, blankets, etc!!!!! By this time, we either still have hand-me-downs or have bought everything that we need. I will also say that I have found that the simpler the better when it comes to toys. The ones with all of the gadgets and that cost a lot are really a waste of money. My son likes a rolling drum that flashes lights and plays music. He can push it around or beat on it and either way it does stuff and best of all it was around $10. Also, my sister-in-law asked us what to get and we had her get a shape-sorter and blocks. Really, the old-school toys are the best for learning. You can always ask the parents as they probably would appreciate that. I know I do.
